耶洗別除滅耶和華眾先知的時候，俄巴底帶走了一百個先知，每五十個人一組，分散藏在山洞裡，又用餅和水供養他們。

他在那裡進了一個洞，就在洞裡過夜。耶和華的話臨到他，說：“以利亞啊，你在這裡幹甚麼？”

大衛離開那裡，逃到亞杜蘭洞。他哥哥們和他父親的全家聽到了，就都下到他那裡去。

掃羅追趕非利士人回來的時候，有人告訴他說：“看哪，大衛在隱．基底的曠野。”（本節在《馬索拉文本》為24:2）掃羅就從以色列人中選出三千精兵，帶領他們到野羊磐石去搜索大衛和跟隨他的人。到了路旁的羊圈，那裡有一個洞，掃羅進去大解；那時，大衛和跟隨他的人正坐在洞裡的深處。

西弗人到基比亞來見掃羅，說：“大衛不是在曠野前面的哈基拉山中躲藏起來嗎？”

義人死亡，沒有人放在心上；虔誠人去世，也沒有人明白；義人去世，是脫離了禍患。

難道沒有人把我所作的事告訴我主嗎？就是耶洗別殺害耶和華眾先知的時候，我把一百個先知，五十人一組的分別藏在山洞裡，又用餅和水供養他們。

我大聲向耶和華呼求，高聲向耶和華懇求。我在他面前傾吐我的苦情，在他面前陳述我的患難。我的靈在我裡面軟弱的時候，你知道我的道路。在我所行的路上，敵人暗設網羅陷害我。求你向我右邊觀看，沒有人關心我；我沒有逃難的地方，也沒有人照顧我。耶和華啊！我向你呼求；我說：“你是我的避難所，是我在活人之地的業分。求你留心聽我的呼求，因為我落到極卑微的地步；求你救我脫離逼迫我的人，因為他們比我強大。求你把我從牢獄中領出來，好讓我稱讚你的名；義人必環繞著我，因為你以厚恩待我。”

所以你起來，回家去吧，你的腳一進城，你的孩子就必死亡。以色列眾人要為他舉哀，把他埋葬；屬耶羅波安的人中，只有他可以入葬墳墓；因為在耶羅波安的家中，只有他向耶和華以色列的神顯出善行。

你們要去查看他所有藏身的地方，確定以後再回來見我，我就與你們同去；如果他在本地，我必從猶大的千門萬戶中把他搜出來。”

在他以前沒有王好像他按著摩西一切律法，全心、全性、全力歸向耶和華；在他以後也沒有興起一個王好像他的。但耶和華並沒有把他向猶大所發的烈怒消除，因瑪拿西種種的惡行激怒了他。耶和華說：“我也要把猶大從我面前趕走，好像我把以色列除去一樣。我要丟棄我所揀選的城市耶路撒冷，以及聖殿，我曾說：‘我的名必立在那裡。’”約西亞其餘的事蹟和他所行的一切，不是都寫在猶大列王的年代誌上嗎？在約西亞的日子，埃及王法老尼哥上來幼發拉底河幫助（按照《馬索拉文本》，“幫助”應作“上去”）亞述王，約西亞王竟去迎戰他，法老看見他的時候，就把他殺死在米吉多。

西弗人上到基比亞去見掃羅，說：“大衛不是在我們這裡的何列斯的山寨，就是在曠野南邊的哈基拉山上藏著嗎？

“你離開這裡，向東方去，躲藏在約旦河東面的基立溪旁。

大衛懼怕，因為掃羅出來尋索他的命。那時大衛住在西弗曠野的何列斯那裡。
