All these people were still living by faith when they died. They didn’t receive the things God had promised. They only saw them and welcomed them from a long way off. They openly said that they were outsiders and strangers on earth.

“ I am a foreigner and stranger among you. Sell me some property for a burial site here so I can bury my dead.”

These were all commended for their faith, yet none of them received what had been promised,

By faith he left Egypt, not fearing the king’s anger; he persevered because he saw him who is invisible.

I know that my redeemer lives, and that in the end he will stand on the earth.

And Jacob said to Pharaoh,“ The years of my pilgrimage are a hundred and thirty. My years have been few and difficult, and they do not equal the years of the pilgrimage of my fathers.”

Consequently, you are no longer foreigners and strangers, but fellow citizens with God’s people and also members of his household,

Then Abraham breathed his last and died at a good old age, an old man and full of years; and he was gathered to his people.

Even angels long to look into these things.

being fully persuaded that God had power to do what he had promised.

Isaac said,“ I am now an old man and don’t know the day of my death.Now then, get your equipment— your quiver and bow— and go out to the open country to hunt some wild game for me.Prepare me the kind of tasty food I like and bring it to me to eat, so that I may give you my blessing before I die.”

Dear friends, I urge you, as foreigners and exiles, to abstain from sinful desires, which wage war against your soul.

Since you call on a Father who judges each person’s work impartially, live out your time as foreigners here in reverent fear.

I am a stranger on earth; do not hide your commands from me.

“ But who am I, and who are my people, that we should be able to give as generously as this? Everything comes from you, and we have given you only what comes from your hand.We are foreigners and strangers in your sight, as were all our ancestors. Our days on earth are like a shadow, without hope.

When Jacob had finished giving instructions to his sons, he drew his feet up into the bed, breathed his last and was gathered to his people.

“ I see him, but not now; I behold him, but not near. A star will come out of Jacob; a scepter will rise out of Israel. He will crush the foreheads of Moab, the skulls of all the people of Sheth.

Isaiah said this because he saw Jesus’ glory and spoke about him.

The scepter will not depart from Judah, nor the ruler’s staff from between his feet, until he to whom it belongs shall come and the obedience of the nations shall be his.

All these are the twelve tribes of Israel, and this is what their father said to them when he blessed them, giving each the blessing appropriate to him.
