Then the Lord said,“ My Spirit will not put up with humans for such a long time, for they are only mortal flesh. In the future, their normal lifespan will be no more than 120 years.”

Then the Lord said,“ My Spirit will not contend with humans forever, for they are mortal; their days will be a hundred and twenty years.”

Then the Lord said,“ My Spirit will not struggle with human beings forever. They will have only 120 years to live.”

Then the Lord said,“ My Spirit shall not abide in man forever, for he is flesh: his days shall be 120 years.”

And the LORD said,“ My Spirit will not remain with mankind forever, because they are corrupt. Their days will be 120 years.”

Then the Lord said,“ My Spirit will not remain with man forever, because he is also flesh; nevertheless his days shall be 120 years.”

And the Lord said,“ My Spirit shall not strive with man forever, for he is indeed flesh; yet his days shall be one hundred and twenty years.”

And Jehovah said, My Spirit shall not strive with man for ever, for that he also is flesh: yet shall his days be a hundred and twenty years.

And the Lord said,“ My Spirit will not remain with mankind forever, because they are corrupt. Their days will be 120 years.”

And the LORD said, My spirit shall not always strive with man, for that he also[ is] flesh: yet his days shall be an hundred and twenty years.

So the LORD said,“ My spirit will not remain in humankind indefinitely, since they are mortal. They will remain for 120 more years.”

Yahweh said,“ My Spirit will not strive with man forever, because he also is flesh; so his days will be one hundred twenty years.”

In your love, you were patient with them for many years. You sent your Spirit, who warned them through the prophets. But still they wouldn’t listen! So once again you allowed the peoples of the land to conquer them.

Christ suffered for our sins once for all time. He never sinned, but he died for sinners to bring you safely home to God. He suffered physical death, but he was raised to life in the Spirit.So he went and preached to the spirits in prison—those who disobeyed God long ago when God waited patiently while Noah was building his boat. Only eight people were saved from drowning in that terrible flood.

But they rebelled against him and grieved his Holy Spirit. So he became their enemy and fought against them.

Do not stifle the Holy Spirit.

For he remembered that they were merely mortal, gone like a breath of wind that never returns.

I will come down and talk to you there. I will take some of the Spirit that is upon you, and I will put the Spirit upon them also. They will bear the burden of the people along with you, so you will not have to carry it alone.

Therefore, this is what the Lord says: I am going to bring calamity upon them, and they will not escape. Though they beg for mercy, I will not listen to their cries.

So I say, let the Holy Spirit guide your lives. Then you won’t be doing what your sinful nature craves.The sinful nature wants to do evil, which is just the opposite of what the Spirit wants. And the Spirit gives us desires that are the opposite of what the sinful nature desires. These two forces are constantly fighting each other, so you are not free to carry out your good intentions.But when you are directed by the Spirit, you are not under obligation to the law of Moses.When you follow the desires of your sinful nature, the results are very clear: sexual immorality, impurity, lustful pleasures,idolatry, sorcery, hostility, quarreling, jealousy, outbursts of anger, selfish ambition, dissension, division,envy, drunkenness, wild parties, and other sins like these. Let me tell you again, as I have before, that anyone living that sort of life will not inherit the Kingdom of God.But the Holy Spirit produces this kind of fruit in our lives: love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness,gentleness, and self control. There is no law against these things!Those who belong to Christ Jesus have nailed the passions and desires of their sinful nature to his cross and crucified them there.

What more could I have done for my vineyard that I have not already done? When I expected sweet grapes, why did my vineyard give me bitter grapes?

“ You stubborn people! You are heathen at heart and deaf to the truth. Must you forever resist the Holy Spirit? That’s what your ancestors did, and so do you!

Enoch, who lived in the seventh generation after Adam, prophesied about these people. He said,“ Listen! The Lord is coming with countless thousands of his holy onesto execute judgment on the people of the world. He will convict every person of all the ungodly things they have done and for all the insults that ungodly sinners have spoken against him.”

So now there is no condemnation for those who belong to Christ Jesus.And because you belong to him, the power of the life giving Spirit has freed you from the power of sin that leads to death.The law of Moses was unable to save us because of the weakness of our sinful nature. So God did what the law could not do. He sent his own Son in a body like the bodies we sinners have. And in that body God declared an end to sin’s control over us by giving his Son as a sacrifice for our sins.He did this so that the just requirement of the law would be fully satisfied for us, who no longer follow our sinful nature but instead follow the Spirit.Those who are dominated by the sinful nature think about sinful things, but those who are controlled by the Holy Spirit think about things that please the Spirit.So letting your sinful nature control your mind leads to death. But letting the Spirit control your mind leads to life and peace.For the sinful nature is always hostile to God. It never did obey God’s laws, and it never will.That’s why those who are still under the control of their sinful nature can never please God.But you are not controlled by your sinful nature. You are controlled by the Spirit if you have the Spirit of God living in you.( And remember that those who do not have the Spirit of Christ living in them do not belong to him at all.)And Christ lives within you, so even though your body will die because of sin, the Spirit gives you life because you have been made right with God.The Spirit of God, who raised Jesus from the dead, lives in you. And just as God raised Christ Jesus from the dead, he will give life to your mortal bodies by this same Spirit living within you.Therefore, dear brothers and sisters, you have no obligation to do what your sinful nature urges you to do.For if you live by its dictates, you will die. But if through the power of the Spirit you put to death the deeds of your sinful nature, you will live.

Humans can reproduce only human life, but the Holy Spirit gives birth to spiritual life.

For I solemnly warned your ancestors when I brought them out of Egypt,“ Obey me!” I have repeated this warning over and over to this day,
