后来埃及和迦南全地遭遇饥荒、大灾难，我们的祖先找不到粮食。

谁是智慧人可以解明这事？耶和华的口向谁说过，以致他可以传讲这事？为什么这地被毁坏，像旷野般荒凉，无人经过呢？

接着又必有七年饥荒；甚至埃及地所有的丰收都被人忘记了，饥荒必把这地毁灭。因为接着而来的饥荒太严重了，使人不觉得这地有过丰收。

田野荒废，土地凄凉，因为五谷毁坏，新酒干竭，油也缺乏。农夫啊！你们要为大麦和小麦羞愧。修理葡萄园的啊！你们要哀号，因为田间的庄稼都破坏了。葡萄树枯干，无花果树衰残；石榴树、棕树、苹果树，田野所有的树木都枯干，因此欢乐从人间消失了。

亚哈对俄巴底说：“你走遍这地，到所有的水泉和溪水那里去看看，也许我们可以找到青草，使骡马能够生存，免得牲畜灭绝。”

夜里每到交更的时分，你要起来呼喊；在主面前你要倾心如水！你的孩童在各街头上因饥饿而昏倒，你要为他们的性命向主举手祷告。“耶和华啊，求你观看！求你鉴察！你曾这样对待过谁呢？难道妇人应该吃掉自己所生的，就是自己所抚养的婴孩吗？难道祭司和先知应该在主的圣所里被杀害吗？”

那些死于刀下的比饿死的还好；饿死的因缺乏田间的出产，就日渐消瘦而死亡。

耶和华的话临到耶利米，是关于旱灾的事：“犹大悲哀，她的城镇（“城镇”原文作“城门”）衰落，人人都坐在地上悲伤痛哭；耶路撒冷的哀声上达于天。他们的显贵差派童仆去打水；童仆来到池边，却找不到水，就拿着空的器皿回来；他们失望难过，蒙着自己的头。土地干裂，因为地上没有雨水；农夫失望，都蒙着自己的头。甚至母鹿在田野生产了小鹿，也得把它丢弃，因为没有青草。野驴站在光秃的高冈上，像野狗喘着气；它们双目发呆，因为没有青草。”
