末底改知道了人所作的這一切事，就撕裂衣服，穿麻布撒爐灰出去，在城中大聲哀呼，悲苦地哀呼。他來到御門前，就停住腳步；因為穿麻布的不得進御門。王的諭旨和勅令所到的各省各處，猶大人中都大大哀悼，並且禁食、哭泣、舉哀；多數人也拿麻布和爐灰去當床鋪。以斯帖的侍女和太監來把這事告訴以斯帖，王后就非常難過、輾轉不安；便送衣服要給末底改穿，叫他脫下麻布衣，他卻不接受。

於是法老趕快把摩西、亞倫召了來，說：『我犯罪得罪了永恆主你們的上帝，也得罪了你們。

我因永恆主而大大高興，我的心以我的上帝為快樂；因為他將拯救之衣服給我穿上，將義氣之外袍給我披上，如同新郎以華帽豫備自己，又如新婦佩戴着金器為妝飾。
