The Israelites did evil in the Lord’s sight. So the Lord handed them over to the Midianites for seven years.The Midianites were so cruel that the Israelites made hiding places for themselves in the mountains, caves, and strongholds.Whenever the Israelites planted their crops, marauders from Midian, Amalek, and the people of the east would attack Israel,

“ Please, come closer,” he said to them. So they came closer. And he said again,“ I am Joseph, your brother, whom you sold into slavery in Egypt.But don’t be upset, and don’t be angry with yourselves for selling me to this place. It was God who sent me here ahead of you to preserve your lives.

Then, just as they were sitting down to eat, they looked up and saw a caravan of camels in the distance coming toward them. It was a group of Ishmaelite traders taking a load of gum, balm, and aromatic resin from Gilead down to Egypt.

She gave birth to Zimran, Jokshan, Medan, Midian, Ishbak, and Shuah.

Meanwhile, the Midianite traders arrived in Egypt, where they sold Joseph to Potiphar, an officer of Pharaoh, the king of Egypt. Potiphar was captain of the palace guard.

Now the priest of Midian had seven daughters who came as usual to draw water and fill the water troughs for their father’s flocks.

and asked,“ How much will you pay me to betray Jesus to you?” And they gave him thirty pieces of silver.

“ On behalf of the people of Israel, take revenge on the Midianites for leading them into idolatry. After that, you will die and join your ancestors.”So Moses said to the people,“ Choose some men, and arm them to fight the Lord’s war of revenge against Midian.

And I said to them,“ If you like, give me my wages, whatever I am worth; but only if you want to.” So they counted out for my wages thirty pieces of silver.And the Lord said to me,“ Throw it to the potter”— this magnificent sum at which they valued me! So I took the thirty coins and threw them to the potter in the Temple of the Lord.

This fulfilled the prophecy of Jeremiah that says,“ They took the thirty pieces of silver— the price at which he was valued by the people of Israel,

However, I do have one request— that each of you give me an earring from the plunder you collected from your fallen enemies.”( The enemies, being Ishmaelites, all wore gold earrings.)

Vast caravans of camels will converge on you, the camels of Midian and Ephah. The people of Sheba will bring gold and frankincense and will come worshiping the Lord.

The woman’s name was Cozbi; she was the daughter of Zur, the leader of a Midianite clan.

Then the Israelites said to Gideon,“ Be our ruler! You and your son and your grandson will be our rulers, for you have rescued us from Midian.”
