以扫就对雅各说：“请你让我喝一些红汤，就这红汤；我已筋疲力尽了！”因此他的名字又称为以东。

请我主在仆人前面先过去；我要按着面前牲畜的速度和孩子们的速度，慢慢领他们走，一直走到西珥我主那里。”

在何利人的西珥山击败了何利人，一直打到靠近旷野的伊勒-巴兰。

后来以扫带着他的妻子儿女和家中所有的人，以及他的牲畜和各样动物，还有他在迦南地所积蓄的一切财产，离开他的弟弟雅各到别的地方去了。因为两人拥有的很多，不能住在一起；他们的牲畜众多，寄居之地容不下他们。于是以扫住在西珥山里；以扫就是以东。以下是西珥山以东人始祖以扫的谱系。

他派了几个使者在他前头。他们就去了，进到撒马利亚人的一个村子，要为他做预备。

于是以扫当天就上路回西珥了。

以扫因父亲祝福了雅各，就怨恨雅各。以扫对自己说：“为父亲举哀的日子临近了，之后我就要杀死弟弟雅各。”当大儿子以扫的话传到莉白加那里，她就派人把小儿子雅各叫来，说：“看哪，你哥哥以扫想要杀你泄恨！

万军之耶和华说：“看哪，我要派遣我的使者在我前面预备道路！你们所寻求的主，必突然来到他的殿；看哪，你们所喜悦的那立约的使者，就要来到！”

“或者，有哪一个君王要出去和别的君王交战，不先坐下来考虑是否能够用一万兵去迎战那用两万兵来攻打他的呢？否则，就会趁着他还远的时候，差派特使去求问和平的事宜。
