当日，拉班把有条纹和有斑点的公山羊、有斑点和有白纹的母山羊，以及所有黑色的绵羊，都挑出来交在自己的众子手里。又使自己和雅各之间相距有三天的路程。雅各就牧放拉班其余的羊群。雅各拿杨树、杏树和枫树的嫩枝子，把树皮剥成白色的条纹，使枝子露出白的部分来。然后把剥了皮的枝子插在水沟和水槽里，枝子正对着来喝水的羊群。羊群来喝水的时候，就彼此交配。羊群对着枝子交配，就生下有条纹和有斑点的小羊来。雅各把羊羔分别出来，使拉班的羊，对着这些有条纹的和所有黑色的羊。他为自己另组羊群，不把它们放在拉班的羊群中。到了肥壮的羊群要交配的时候，雅各就在羊群的面前把枝子插在水沟里，使它们在枝子中间彼此交配。但当瘦弱的羊群交配的时候，雅各就不插枝子。这样，瘦弱的就归拉班，肥壮的就归雅各。于是，雅各变得非常富有，拥有很多羊群、仆婢、骆驼和驴。雅各听见拉班的众子谈论，说：“雅各把我们父亲所有的都夺去了，他这一切财物，都是从我们父亲的财产那里得来的。”

王所爱的女子啊！你要听，要看，要留心地听；你要忘记你的本族和你的父家；

这样，神把你们父亲的牲畜夺来，赐给我了。
