亞伯拉罕從幔利遷往南地，住在加低斯和書珥之間。在基拉耳寄居期間，

就在那天，耶和華跟亞伯蘭立約，說：「我必將這片土地賜給你的後代，使他們得到從埃及河到幼發拉底河一帶的土地，

對他說：「耶和華說，『你既然願意把你的兒子，你的獨生子獻給我，我憑自己向你起誓，我必賜福給你，使你的後裔多如天上的星和海邊的沙。你的後裔必佔領仇敵的城池，天下萬國必因你的後裔而蒙福，因為你聽從了我的話。』」

就是祂與亞伯拉罕所立的約，向以撒所起的誓。

他憑信心像異鄉人一樣寄居在上帝應許給他的地方。他住在帳篷裡，與同受一個應許的以撒和雅各一樣。

你起來走遍這片土地，因為我要把這片土地賜給你。」

這些人到死都滿懷信心。他們雖然沒有得到上帝所應許的，卻從遠處望見了，就歡喜快樂，承認自己在世上不過是寄居的異鄉人。他們抱這樣的態度，表明他們正在尋找一個家鄉。如果他們想念的是自己離開的家鄉，就找機會回去了。然而，他們渴慕的是天上更美的家鄉。所以，上帝不以被他們稱為上帝為恥，因為祂已經為他們預備了一座城。

耶和華對亞伯蘭說：「你要離開家鄉、親族和父親的家，到我要指示你的地方去。我必使你成為大國，我必賜福給你，使你聲名遠播。你必成為別人的祝福。

不要因為惡人而煩惱，也不要羡慕作惡之人，因為他們如瞬息枯萎的草芥，又如轉眼消逝的綠草。要信靠耶和華，要行善，要在這片土地上安然度日。要以耶和華為樂，祂必成全你的願望。要把一切交托給耶和華，信靠祂，祂必幫助你，使你的公義如晨光照耀，你的仁義如日中天。

他擁有很多的牛羊和僕婢，非利士人嫉妒他。

我要把你現在寄居的整個迦南賜給你和你的後裔永遠作產業，我也必做他們的上帝。」

同樣，上帝為要向承受應許的人顯明祂的旨意絕不更改，就用誓言向他們保證。

耶和華說：「我要教導你，引領你走正路；我要勸導你，看顧你。

約瑟住在他的埃及主人家中，耶和華與他同在，使他凡事亨通。

「耶和華啊，求你垂聽我的禱告，傾聽我的呼求，別對我的眼淚視若無睹。因為我在你面前只是客旅，是寄居的，正如我的祖先。

你必按古時給我們列祖的誓言，以信實待雅各，以慈愛待亞伯拉罕。

約瑟坐牢的時候，耶和華與他同在，恩待他，使監獄長賞識他。

以撒在那裡耕種，耶和華賜福給他，那一年他得了百倍的收成。

你穿越洪濤，我必與你同在；你渡過江河，必不會被水淹沒；你在火中走過，必不會被燒傷，火焰不會燒到你身上。

你們從我身上學習、領受、看到和聽到的，都要照著去行。這樣，賜平安的上帝就必與你們同在。

不要害怕，因為我與你同在，我必從東方、從西方召集你和你的兒女。
