The Lord is the God of heaven and the God of earth. I want you to make a promise to me in his name. I’m living among the people of Canaan. But I want you to promise me that you won’t get a wife for my son from their daughters.

我要你指着耶和华——天和地的神起誓，不可从我所住的迦南，为我的儿子娶他们的女儿为妻；

指天地之上帝耶和華而誓、我居迦南、斯土之女、勿妻我子。

我令爾指主宰天地之耶和華天主而誓、我居迦南人中、爾毋為我子娶其女為妻、

I want you to swear by the Lord, the God of heaven and the God of earth, that you will not get a wife for my son from the daughters of the Canaanites, among whom I am living,

that I may make you swear by the Lord, the God of heaven and God of the earth, that you will not take a wife for my son from the daughters of the Canaanites, among whom I dwell,

Swear by the Lord, the God of heaven and earth, that you will not allow my son to marry one of these local Canaanite women.

and I will have you swear by the LORD, God of heaven and God of earth, that you will not take a wife for my son from the daughters of the Canaanites among whom I live,

and I will make you swear by the Lord, the God of heaven and the God of earth, that you shall not take a wife for my son from the daughters of the Canaanites, among whom I live;

and I will make you swear by the Lord, the God of heaven and the God of the earth, that you will not take a wife for my son from the daughters of the Canaanites, among whom I dwell;

and I will make thee swear by Jehovah, the God of heaven and the God of the earth, that thou wilt not take a wife for my son of the daughters of the Canaanites, among whom I dwell:

and I will have you swear by the Lord, God of heaven and God of earth, that you will not take a wife for my son from the daughters of the Canaanites among whom I live,

And I will make thee swear by the LORD, the God of heaven, and the God of the earth, that thou shalt not take a wife unto my son of the daughters of the Canaanites, among whom I dwell:

so that I may make you solemnly promise by the LORD, the God of heaven and the God of the earth: You must not acquire a wife for my son from the daughters of the Canaanites, among whom I am living.

I will make you swear by Yahweh, the God of heaven and the God of the earth, that you shall not take a wife for my son of the daughters of the Canaanites, among whom I live.

Do not be joined to unbelievers. What do right and wrong have in common? Can light and darkness be friends?How can Christ and Satan agree? Or what does a believer have in common with an unbeliever?How can the temple of the true God and the statues of other gods agree? We are the temple of the living God. God has said,“ I will live with them. I will walk among them. I will be their God. And they will be my people.”( Leviticus 26:12; Jeremiah 32:38; Ezekiel 37:27)So,“ Come out from among them and be separate, says the Lord. Do not touch anything that is not pure and‘ clean.’ Then I will receive you.”( Isaiah 52:11; Ezekiel 20:34, 41)

When Esau was 40 years old, he got married to Judith. She was the daughter of Beeri the Hittite. Esau also married Basemath. She was the daughter of Elon the Hittite.Isaac and Rebekah became very upset because Esau had married Hittite women.

Don’t marry any of their people. Don’t give your daughters to their sons. And don’t take their daughters for your sons.If you do, those people will turn your children away from serving the Lord. Then your children will serve other gods. The Lord will be very angry with you. He will quickly destroy you.

Hiram continued,“ I praise the Lord. He is the God of Israel. He made heaven and earth. He has given King David a wise son. You have good sense. You understand what is right. You will build a temple for the Lord. You will also build a palace for yourself.

But Abram said to the king of Sodom,“ I have raised my hand to make a promise to the Lord. He is the Most High God. He is the Creator of heaven and earth.

Then Esau realized how much his father Isaac disliked Canaanite women.

Jonathan had David promise his friendship again because he loved him. In fact, Jonathan loved David just as he loved himself.

Hezekiah prayed to the Lord. He said,“ Lord, you are the God of Israel. You sit on your throne between the cherubim. You alone are God over all the kingdoms on earth. You have made heaven and earth.

“ Now then, please give me your word. Promise me in the name of the Lord that you will be kind to my family. I’ve been kind to you. Promise me

So I gave them a warning. I cursed them. I beat up some of them. I pulled their hair out. I had them make a promise in God’s name. I said,“ You must promise not to give your daughters to be married to their sons. You must promise not to let their daughters marry your sons. And you must not marry their daughters either.

Honor the Lord your God. Serve him. Remain true to him. When you make promises, do so in his name.

You are the one and only Lord. You made the heavens. You made even the highest heavens. You created all the stars in the sky. You created the earth and everything on it. And you made the oceans and everything in them. You give life to everything. Every living being in heaven worships you.

Then the problem will be settled by promising the Lord to tell the truth. Suppose the neighbor says,‘ I didn’t steal your property.’ Then the owner must accept what the neighbor says. No payment is required.

Then Rebekah spoke to Isaac. She said,“ I’m sick of living because of Esau’s Hittite wives. Suppose Jacob also marries a Hittite woman. If he does, my life won’t be worth living.”So Isaac called for Jacob and blessed him. Then he commanded him,“ Don’t get married to a Canaanite woman.Go at once to Paddan Aram. Go to the house of your mother’s father Bethuel. Find a wife for yourself there. Take her from among the daughters of your mother’s brother Laban.

Now make a promise to me here while God is watching. Give me your word that you will treat me fairly. Promise that you will treat my children and their children the same way. I’ve been kind to you. Now you be kind to me and the country where you are living as an outsider.”

A woman has to stay married to her husband as long as he lives. If he dies, she is free to marry anyone she wants to. But the one she marries must belong to the Lord.

He gave a blessing to Abram. He said,“ May the Most High God bless Abram. May the Creator of heaven and earth bless him.

Worship the Lord your God. He is the only one you should serve. When you make promises, do so in his name.

May the Lord bless you. He is the Maker of heaven and earth.

I have made a promise in my own name. I have spoken with complete honesty. I will not take back a single word. I said,‘ Everyone will kneel down to me. Everyone’s mouth will make promises in my name.’

Come now. Let’s make a formal agreement, you and I. Let it be a witness between us.”So Jacob set up a stone as a way to remember.He said to his relatives,“ Get some stones.” So they took stones and put them in a pile. And they ate there by it.Laban named the pile of stones Jegar Sahadutha. Jacob named it Galeed.Laban said,“ This pile of stones is a witness between you and me today.” That’s why it was named Galeed.It was also called Mizpah. That’s because Laban said,“ May the Lord keep watch between you and me when we are away from each other.Don’t treat my daughters badly. Don’t get married to any women besides my daughters. There isn’t anyone here to see what we’re doing. But remember that God is a witness between you and me.”Laban also said to Jacob,“ Here is this pile of stones. And here is this stone I’ve set up. I’ve set them up between you and me.This pile is a witness. And this stone is a witness. They are witnesses that I won’t go past this pile to harm you. And they are witnesses that you won’t go past this pile and this stone to harm me.The God of Abraham and Nahor is also the God of their father. May their God decide which of us is right.” So Jacob made a promise using the name of the God his father Isaac worshiped.

At that point the priest must put the woman under the curse that will come if she breaks her word. He must say,“ May the Lord cause you to become a curse among your people. You will become a curse when the Lord makes your body unable to have children.

Make all your promises in my name. When you promise say,‘ You can be sure that the Lord is alive.’ Be truthful, fair and honest when you make these promises. Then the nations will ask for blessings from me. And they will boast about me.”

The Lord speaks to the Jews living in Babylon. He says,“ Here is what you must tell the people of the nations. Tell them,‘ Your gods did not make the heavens and the earth. In fact, these gods will disappear from the earth. They will vanish from under the heavens.’ ”

Joseph made the Israelites promise him. He said,“ God will surely come to help you. Then you must carry my bones up from this place.”

Suppose those nations learn to follow the practices of my people. And they make their promises in my name. When they promise, they say,‘ You can be sure that the Lord is alive.’ They do this just as they once taught my people to make promises in Baal’s name. Then I will give them a place among my people.

People of Jacob, listen to me. You are called by the name of Israel. You come from the family line of Judah. You make promises in the name of the Lord. You pray to Israel’s God. But you aren’t honest. You don’t mean what you say.

The Nephilim were on the earth in those days. That was when the sons of God went to the daughters of human beings. Children were born to them. The Nephilim were famous heroes who lived long ago. Nephilim were also on the earth later on.

People promise things by someone greater than themselves. Giving your word makes a promise certain. It puts an end to all arguing.

You will choose some of their daughters as wives for your sons. And those daughters will commit sin by worshiping their gods. Then they will lead your sons to do the same thing.

“ Do not misuse the name of the Lord your God. The Lord will find guilty anyone who misuses his name.

The sons of God saw that the daughters of human beings were beautiful. So they married any of them they chose.

“ Be careful to do everything I have said to you. Do not speak the names of other gods. Do not even let them be heard on your lips.

I will destroy those who bow down on their roofs to worship all the stars. I will destroy those who make promises not only in my name but also in the name of Molek.

Canaan was the father of Sidon. Sidon was his oldest son. Canaan was also the father of the Hittites,Jebusites, Amorites and Girgashites.And he was the father of the Hivites, Arkites, Sinites,Arvadites, Zemarites and Hamathites. Later the Canaanite tribes scattered.The borders of Canaan reached from Sidon toward Gerar all the way to Gaza. Then they continued toward Sodom, Gomorrah, Admah and Zeboyim all the way to Lasha.

They will ask me to bless their land. They will do it in my name. I am the one true God. They will make promises in their land. They will do it in my name. I am the one true God. The troubles of the past will be forgotten. They will be hidden from my eyes.

“‘ Do not give your word in my name and then be a false witness. That would be treating the name of your God as if it were not holy. I am the Lord.

They answered,“ We saw clearly that the Lord was with you. So we said,‘ There should be an agreement between us and you.’ We want to make a peace treaty with you.Give us your word that you won’t harm us. We didn’t harm you. We always treated you well. We sent you away peacefully. And now the Lord has blessed you.”Then Isaac had a feast prepared for them. They ate and drank.Early the next morning the men made a treaty with each other. Then Isaac sent the men of Gerar on their way. And they left peacefully.
