And they said to one another,“ Why are we sitting here until we die?If we say,‘ Let us enter the city,’ the famine is in the city, and we shall die there. And if we sit here, we die also. So now come, let us go over to the camp of the Syrians. If they spare our lives we shall live, and if they kill us we shall but die.”So they arose at twilight to go to the camp of the Syrians. But when they came to the edge of the camp of the Syrians, behold, there was no one there.For the Lord had made the army of the Syrians hear the sound of chariots and of horses, the sound of a great army, so that they said to one another,“ Behold, the king of Israel has hired against us the kings of the Hittites and the kings of Egypt to come against us.”So they fled away in the twilight and abandoned their tents, their horses, and their donkeys, leaving the camp as it was, and fled for their lives.And when these lepers came to the edge of the camp, they went into a tent and ate and drank, and they carried off silver and gold and clothing and went and hid them. Then they came back and entered another tent and carried off things from it and went and hid them.

Now there was no food in all the land, for the famine was very severe, so that the land of Egypt and the land of Canaan languished by reason of the famine.

And he called to her and said,“ Bring me a little water in a vessel, that I may drink.”And as she was going to bring it, he called to her and said,“ Bring me a morsel of bread in your hand.”And she said,“ As the Lord your God lives, I have nothing baked, only a handful of flour in a jar and a little oil in a jug. And now I am gathering a couple of sticks that I may go in and prepare it for myself and my son, that we may eat it and die.”And Elijah said to her,“ Do not fear; go and do as you have said. But first make me a little cake of it and bring it to me, and afterward make something for yourself and your son.For thus says the Lord, the God of Israel,‘ The jar of flour shall not be spent, and the jug of oil shall not be empty, until the day that the Lord sends rain upon the earth.’”And she went and did as Elijah said. And she and he and her household ate for many days.The jar of flour was not spent, neither did the jug of oil become empty, according to the word of the Lord that he spoke by Elijah.After this the son of the woman, the mistress of the house, became ill. And his illness was so severe that there was no breath left in him.And she said to Elijah,“ What have you against me, O man of God? You have come to me to bring my sin to remembrance and to cause the death of my son!”

The word of the Lord that came to Jeremiah concerning the drought:

a fruitful land into a salty waste, because of the evil of its inhabitants.

Now there came a famine throughout all Egypt and Canaan, and great affliction, and our fathers could find no food.

Now Elisha had said to the woman whose son he had restored to life,“ Arise, and depart with your household, and sojourn wherever you can, for the Lord has called for a famine, and it will come upon the land for seven years.”So the woman arose and did according to the word of the man of God. She went with her household and sojourned in the land of the Philistines seven years.

Then he said,“ I am God, the God of your father. Do not be afraid to go down to Egypt, for there I will make you into a great nation.I myself will go down with you to Egypt, and I will also bring you up again, and Joseph’s hand shall close your eyes.”
