大衛年間，連續有三年的饑荒。大衛尋求耶和華的面，耶和華說：「這與掃羅和他家殺人流血有關，因為他曾經殺害基遍人。」

在士師們治理的日子裡，猶大地有了饑荒。猶大的伯利恆有一個人，帶著他的妻子和兩個兒子，去摩押地寄居。

使結果實的土地成為鹽鹼地，這都因其上居民的邪惡。

後來整個埃及和迦南地區遭遇了饑荒和大災難，我們的祖先找不到糧食。

這樣，以色列的兒子們夾雜在前來的人群中也來買糧，因為迦南地也有饑荒。

義人有許多患難，但耶和華解救他脫離這一切，

神說：「我是神，是你父親的神。你不要害怕下埃及去，因為我必使你在那裡成為大國。我要親自與你一同下埃及去，也必定把你帶上來。約瑟要親手合上你的眼。」
