Why, then, was the law given at all? It was added because of transgressions until the Seed to whom the promise referred had come. The law was given through angels and entrusted to a mediator.

For apart from the law, sin was dead.Once I was alive apart from the law; but when the commandment came, sin sprang to life and I died.I found that the very commandment that was intended to bring life actually brought death.For sin, seizing the opportunity afforded by the commandment, deceived me, and through the commandment put me to death.So then, the law is holy, and the commandment is holy, righteous and good.Did that which is good, then, become death to me? By no means! Nevertheless, in order that sin might be recognized as sin, it used what is good to bring about my death, so that through the commandment sin might become utterly sinful. (niv)

The promises were spoken to Abraham and to his seed. Scripture does not say“ and to seeds,” meaning many people, but“ and to your seed,” meaning one person, who is Christ. (niv)

The law was brought in so that the trespass might increase. But where sin increased, grace increased all the more,so that, just as sin reigned in death, so also grace might reign through righteousness to bring eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord. (niv)

For since the message spoken through angels was binding, and every violation and disobedience received its just punishment, (niv)

For if a law had been given that could impart life, then righteousness would certainly have come by the law.But Scripture has locked up everything under the control of sin, so that what was promised, being given through faith in Jesus Christ, might be given to those who believe.Before the coming of this faith, we were held in custody under the law, locked up until the faith that was to come would be revealed.So the law was our guardian until Christ came that we might be justified by faith.Now that this faith has come, we are no longer under a guardian. What advantage, then, is there in being a Jew, or what value is there in circumcision?Much in every way! First of all, the Jews have been entrusted with the very words of God. (niv)

So he said he would destroy them— had not Moses, his chosen one, stood in the breach before him to keep his wrath from destroying them. (niv)

Then the Lord said to Moses,“ Come up to the Lord, you and Aaron, Nadab and Abihu, and seventy of the elders of Israel. You are to worship at a distance,but Moses alone is to approach the Lord; the others must not come near. And the people may not come up with him.”When Moses went and told the people all the Lord’s words and laws, they responded with one voice,“ Everything the Lord has said we will do.”Moses then wrote down everything the Lord had said. He got up early the next morning and built an altar at the foot of the mountain and set up twelve stone pillars representing the twelve tribes of Israel.Then he sent young Israelite men, and they offered burnt offerings and sacrificed young bulls as fellowship offerings to the Lord.Moses took half of the blood and put it in bowls, and the other half he splashed against the altar.Then he took the Book of the Covenant and read it to the people. They responded,“ We will do everything the Lord has said; we will obey.”Moses then took the blood, sprinkled it on the people and said,“ This is the blood of the covenant that the Lord has made with you in accordance with all these words.”Moses and Aaron, Nadab and Abihu, and the seventy elders of Israel went upand saw the God of Israel. Under his feet was something like a pavement made of lapis lazuli, as bright blue as the sky.But God did not raise his hand against these leaders of the Israelites; they saw God, and they ate and drank.The Lord said to Moses,“ Come up to me on the mountain and stay here, and I will give you the tablets of stone with the law and commandments I have written for their instruction.” (niv)

“ But do not think I will accuse you before the Father. Your accuser is Moses, on whom your hopes are set.If you believed Moses, you would believe me, for he wrote about me.But since you do not believe what he wrote, how are you going to believe what I say?” (niv)

The Lord your God will raise up for you a prophet like me from among you, from your fellow Israelites. You must listen to him.For this is what you asked of the Lord your God at Horeb on the day of the assembly when you said,“ Let us not hear the voice of the Lord our God nor see this great fire anymore, or we will die.”The Lord said to me:“ What they say is good.I will raise up for them a prophet like you from among their fellow Israelites, and I will put my words in his mouth. He will tell them everything I command him.I myself will call to account anyone who does not listen to my words that the prophet speaks in my name. (niv)

What I am saying is that as long as an heir is underage, he is no different from a slave, although he owns the whole estate.The heir is subject to guardians and trustees until the time set by his father.So also, when we were underage, we were in slavery under the elemental spiritual forces of the world.But when the set time had fully come, God sent his Son, born of a woman, born under the law, (niv)

“ He said to him,‘ If they do not listen to Moses and the Prophets, they will not be convinced even if someone rises from the dead.’” (niv)

These are the commandments the Lord proclaimed in a loud voice to your whole assembly there on the mountain from out of the fire, the cloud and the deep darkness; and he added nothing more. Then he wrote them on two stone tablets and gave them to me.When you heard the voice out of the darkness, while the mountain was ablaze with fire, all the leaders of your tribes and your elders came to me.And you said,“ The Lord our God has shown us his glory and his majesty, and we have heard his voice from the fire. Today we have seen that a person can live even if God speaks with them.But now, why should we die? This great fire will consume us, and we will die if we hear the voice of the Lord our God any longer.For what mortal has ever heard the voice of the living God speaking out of fire, as we have, and survived?Go near and listen to all that the Lord our God says. Then tell us whatever the Lord our God tells you. We will listen and obey.”The Lord heard you when you spoke to me, and the Lord said to me,“ I have heard what this people said to you. Everything they said was good.Oh, that their hearts would be inclined to fear me and keep all my commands always, so that it might go well with them and their children forever!“ Go, tell them to return to their tents.But you stay here with me so that I may give you all the commands, decrees and laws you are to teach them to follow in the land I am giving them to possess.”So be careful to do what the Lord your God has commanded you; do not turn aside to the right or to the left.Walk in obedience to all that the Lord your God has commanded you, so that you may live and prosper and prolong your days in the land that you will possess. (niv)

These are the regulations for a man with a discharge, for anyone made unclean by an emission of semen, (niv)

and said to Moses,“ Speak to us yourself and we will listen. But do not have God speak to us or we will die.”Moses said to the people,“ Do not be afraid. God has come to test you, so that the fear of God will be with you to keep you from sinning.”The people remained at a distance, while Moses approached the thick darkness where God was.Then the Lord said to Moses,“ Tell the Israelites this:‘ You have seen for yourselves that I have spoken to you from heaven: (niv)

Then the Lord said to Moses,“ Write down these words, for in accordance with these words I have made a covenant with you and with Israel.”Moses was there with the Lord forty days and forty nights without eating bread or drinking water. And he wrote on the tablets the words of the covenant— the Ten Commandments.When Moses came down from Mount Sinai with the two tablets of the covenant law in his hands, he was not aware that his face was radiant because he had spoken with the Lord.When Aaron and all the Israelites saw Moses, his face was radiant, and they were afraid to come near him.But Moses called to them; so Aaron and all the leaders of the community came back to him, and he spoke to them.Afterward all the Israelites came near him, and he gave them all the commands the Lord had given him on Mount Sinai.When Moses finished speaking to them, he put a veil over his face.But whenever he entered the Lord’s presence to speak with him, he removed the veil until he came out. And when he came out and told the Israelites what he had been commanded,they saw that his face was radiant. Then Moses would put the veil back over his face until he went in to speak with the Lord. (niv)

I lay prostrate before the Lord those forty days and forty nights because the Lord had said he would destroy you.I prayed to the Lord and said,“ Sovereign Lord, do not destroy your people, your own inheritance that you redeemed by your great power and brought out of Egypt with a mighty hand.Remember your servants Abraham, Isaac and Jacob. Overlook the stubbornness of this people, their wickedness and their sin.Otherwise, the country from which you brought us will say,‘ Because the Lord was not able to take them into the land he had promised them, and because he hated them, he brought them out to put them to death in the wilderness.’But they are your people, your inheritance that you brought out by your great power and your outstretched arm.” (niv)

And the Lord said to me,“ I have seen this people, and they are a stiff-necked people indeed!Let me alone, so that I may destroy them and blot out their name from under heaven. And I will make you into a nation stronger and more numerous than they.”So I turned and went down from the mountain while it was ablaze with fire. And the two tablets of the covenant were in my hands.When I looked, I saw that you had sinned against the Lord your God; you had made for yourselves an idol cast in the shape of a calf. You had turned aside quickly from the way that the Lord had commanded you.So I took the two tablets and threw them out of my hands, breaking them to pieces before your eyes.Then once again I fell prostrate before the Lord for forty days and forty nights; I ate no bread and drank no water, because of all the sin you had committed, doing what was evil in the Lord’s sight and so arousing his anger.I feared the anger and wrath of the Lord, for he was angry enough with you to destroy you. But again the Lord listened to me.And the Lord was angry enough with Aaron to destroy him, but at that time I prayed for Aaron too. (niv)

And what other nation is so great as to have such righteous decrees and laws as this body of laws I am setting before you today?Only be careful, and watch yourselves closely so that you do not forget the things your eyes have seen or let them fade from your heart as long as you live. Teach them to your children and to their children after them. (niv)

He has revealed his word to Jacob, his laws and decrees to Israel.He has done this for no other nation; they do not know his laws. Praise the Lord. (niv)
