律法不是本於信，但是「遵行這些事的人，將因此而活。」

The law is not based on faith; on the contrary, it says,“ The person who does these things will live by them.”

This way of faith is very different from the way of law, which says,“ It is through obeying the law that a person has life.”

原來，有關出於律法的義，摩西寫道：「遵行這些事的人，將因此而活」；而有關本於信的義，卻這樣吩咐：「你心裡不用說：誰要升到天上去？」——這意思是要把基督帶下來；

這是因為，如果本於律法的才是繼承人，信就落了空，應許也就無效了。

既然藉著恩典，就不再本於行為了；否則，恩典就不再是恩典了。

做工的人得工錢，不算是恩典，而是應得的；但是，一個人雖沒有做工，卻信靠那稱不敬虔之人為義的神，這人的信就被算為義。

為此，這應許是本於信，好使這應許照著恩典，能確保給所有的後裔——不僅是給屬律法的，也是給屬亞伯拉罕信心的。亞伯拉罕在神面前是我們每個人的父，

耶穌對他說：「你為什麼問我有關良善的事呢？只有一位是良善的。如果你想進入永生，就應該遵守誡命。」

這時候，忽然有一個律法師站起來試探耶穌，說：「老師，我該做什麼才會繼承永恆的生命呢？」耶穌對他說：「律法上是怎麼寫的？你是怎麼讀的呢？」他回答說：「你要以全心、全靈、全力、全意愛主——你的神，並且要愛鄰如己。」耶穌說：「你回答得對。你這樣去做，就將活著。」

那麼，我們要怎麼說呢？那原來沒有追求義的外邦人，卻得到了義，就是因信而得的義；而以色列人追求律法的義，卻沒有達到律法的義。這是為什麼呢？因為他們不是本於信，倒像是本於行為去追求的，所以他們就絆倒在那「絆腳的石頭」上。
