Eleazar was the father of Phinehas, and Phinehas was the father of Abishua.Abishua was the father of Bukki, and Bukki was the father of Uzzi.Uzzi was the father of Zerahiah, and Zerahiah was the father of Meraioth.Meraioth was the father of Amariah, and Amariah was the father of Ahitub.Ahitub was the father of Zadok, and Zadok was the father of Ahimaaz.Ahimaaz was the father of Azariah, and Azariah was the father of Johanan.Johanan was the father of Azariah, who served as a priest in the temple Solomon built in Jerusalem.Azariah was the father of Amariah, and Amariah was the father of Ahitub.Ahitub was the father of Zadok, and Zadok was the father of Shallum.Shallum was the father of Hilkiah, and Hilkiah was the father of Azariah.Azariah was the father of Seraiah, and Seraiah was the father of Jehozadak.

“ I, King Artaxerxes, hereby issue orders to all the treasurers of Trans-Euphrates, that you precisely execute all that Ezra the priestly scribe of the law of the God of heaven may request of you–

The elders of the Jews continued building and prospering, while at the same time Haggai the prophet and Zechariah the son of Iddo continued prophesying. They built and brought it to completion by the command of the God of Israel and by the command of Cyrus and Darius and Artaxerxes king of Persia.

“ Artaxerxes, king of kings, to Ezra the priest, a scribe of the perfect law of the God of heaven:

“ Go up to Hilkiah the high priest and have him melt down the silver that has been brought by the people to the LORD’s temple and has been collected by the guards at the door.

So Ezra the priest brought the law before the assembly which included men and women and all those able to understand what they heard.( This happened on the first day of the seventh month.)So he read it before the plaza in front of the Water Gate from dawn till noon before the men and women and those children who could understand. All the people were eager to hear the book of the law.Ezra the scribe stood on a towering wooden platform constructed for this purpose. Standing near him on his right were Mattithiah, Shema, Anaiah, Uriah, Hilkiah, and Masseiah. On his left were Pedaiah, Mishael, Malkijah, Hashum, Hashbaddanah, Zechariah, and Meshullam.Ezra opened the book in plain view of all the people, for he was elevated above all the people. When he opened the book, all the people stood up.Ezra blessed the LORD, the great God, and all the people replied“ Amen! Amen!” as they lifted their hands. Then they bowed down and worshiped the LORD with their faces to the ground.Jeshua, Bani, Sherebiah, Jamin, Akkub, Shabbethai, Hodiah, Maaseiah, Kelita, Azariah, Jozabad, Hanan, and Pelaiah– all of whom were Levites– were teaching the people the law, as the people remained standing.They read from the book of God’s law, explaining it and imparting insight. Thus the people gained understanding from what was read.Then Nehemiah the governor, Ezra the priestly scribe, and the Levites who were imparting understanding to the people said to all of them,“ This day is holy to the LORD your God. Do not mourn or weep.” For all the people had been weeping when they heard the words of the law.

They went to Hilkiah the high priest and gave him the silver that had been brought to God’s temple. The Levites who guarded the door had collected it from the people of Manasseh and Ephraim and from all who were left in Israel, as well as from all the people of Judah and Benjamin and the residents of Jerusalem.

Hilkiah informed Shaphan the scribe,“ I found the law scroll in the LORD’s temple.” Hilkiah gave the scroll to Shaphan.

Seraiah son of Hilkiah, the son of Meshullam, the son of Zadok, the son of Meraioth, the son of Ahitub, supervisor in the temple of God,

The captain of the royal guard took Seraiah the chief priest, Zephaniah the priest who was second in rank, and the three doorkeepers.From the city he took an official who was in charge of the soldiers, seven of the king’s advisers who were discovered in the city, an official army secretary who drafted citizens for military service, and sixty citizens who were discovered in the middle of the city.Nebuzaradan, the captain of the royal guard, took them and brought them to the king of Babylon at Riblah.The king of Babylon ordered them to be executed at Riblah in the territory of Hamath. So Judah was taken into exile away from its land.

The captain of the royal guard took Seraiah the chief priest and Zephaniah, the priest who was second in rank, and the three doorkeepers.

Hilkiah the high priest informed Shaphan the scribe,“ I found the law scroll in the LORD’s temple.” Hilkiah gave the scroll to Shaphan and he read it.

Now Ezra had dedicated himself to the study of the law of the LORD, to its observance, and to teaching its statutes and judgments in Israel.

These are the leaders and those enrolled with them by genealogy who were coming up with me from Babylon during the reign of King Artaxerxes:from the descendants of Phinehas, Gershom; from the descendants of Ithamar, Daniel; from the descendants of David, Hattushthe son of Shecaniah; from the descendants of Parosh, Zechariah, and with him were enrolled by genealogy 150 men;from the descendants of Pahath-Moab, Eliehoenai son of Zerahiah, and with him 200 men;from the descendants of Zattu, Shecaniah son of Jahaziel, and with him 300 men;from the descendants of Adin, Ebed son of Jonathan, and with him 50 men;from the descendants of Elam, Jeshaiah son of Athaliah, and with him 70 men;from the descendants of Shephatiah, Zebadiah son of Michael, and with him 80 men;from the descendants of Joab, Obadiah son of Jehiel, and with him 218 men;from the descendants of Bani, Shelomith son of Josiphiah, and with him 160 men;

Azariah son of Hilkiah, son of Meshullam, son of Zadok, son of Meraioth, son of Ahitub the leader in God’s temple;
