拉伯沙基對他們說：“你們去對希西家說：‘亞述大王這樣說：你所倚靠的算得是甚麼倚靠呢？我說：你打仗所用的謀略和能力，不過是虛話罷了。你到底倚靠誰，以致你背叛我呢？看哪！你所倚靠的埃及，是那壓傷的蘆葦杖；人若倚靠它，它就會插進他的手，把手刺透。埃及王法老對所有倚靠他的人，也是這樣。你若對我說：我們倚靠耶和華我們的神，這神所有的邱壇和祭壇豈不是都給希西家廢去了，他還對猶大和耶路撒冷的人說：你們只要在這祭壇面前敬拜嗎？現在你可以與我的主人亞述王打賭：我給你二千匹馬，看你這一方面能否派出足夠騎馬的人來。若不能，你怎能擊退我主的臣僕中最小的軍長呢？你竟倚靠埃及的戰車和馬兵嗎？現在，我上來攻打這地，要把這地毀滅，豈沒有耶和華的意思嗎？耶和華曾對我說：你要上去攻打這地，把它毀滅。’”以利亞敬、舍伯那和約亞對拉伯沙基說：“請你用亞蘭語對你的僕人說話，因為我們聽得懂；不要用猶大語對我們說話，免得城牆上的人民聽見。”但拉伯沙基說：“我主差派我來，只是對你和你的主說這些話嗎？不也是對那些坐在城牆上，要和你們一同吃自己的糞、喝自己的尿的人說嗎？”於是拉伯沙基站著，用猶大語大聲呼喊說：“你們要聽亞述大王的話，王這樣說：‘你們不要被希西家欺騙了，因為他決不能拯救你們；也不要給希西家說服你們倚靠耶和華，說：耶和華必定拯救我們，這城也必不交在亞述王的手中。’不要聽希西家的話，因為亞述王這樣說：‘你們要與我和好（“與我和好”直譯是“向我祝福問安”），出來向我投降，這樣各人就可以吃自己葡萄樹和無花果樹的果子，也可以喝自己井裡的水；等到我來的時候，就會把你們領到一個與你們本地一樣的地方；就是一個有五穀和新酒的地方，一個有糧食和葡萄園的地方。你們要小心，免得希西家慫恿你們說：耶和華必拯救我們。列國的神有哪一位曾拯救自己的國土脫離亞述王的手呢？

我曾看見強暴的惡人興旺，像樹木在本土茂盛。

但亞述並沒有這樣想過，他心裡也沒有這樣打算；他心裡倒想毀滅、剪除多國。因為他說：“在我手下的眾領袖不都是王嗎？迦勒挪不是像迦基米施嗎？哈瑪不是像亞珥拔嗎？撒瑪利亞不是像大馬士革嗎？我的手伸展到這些充滿偶像的國，他們雕刻的像比耶路撒冷和撒瑪利亞的還多。我怎樣對待撒瑪利亞和其中的偶像，不也照樣對待耶路撒冷和其中的偶像嗎？”主在錫安山和耶路撒冷成全了他一切工作的時候，他必說：我要懲罰亞述王自大的心所結的果子，和他眼目高傲的態度。因為他說：“我靠著我手的能力和我的智慧行事，因為我很聰明；我挪移了列國的地界，搶奪了他們積蓄的財寶，並且我像個勇士般使他們的居民全都俯伏下來。我的手伸到列國的財寶那裡，好像抓到鳥窩一樣；我取得了全地，好像人拾起被棄的雀蛋；沒有動翅膀的，沒有張嘴的，也沒有鳴叫的。”

你必定聽過亞述列王向列國所行的，就是把她們完全毀滅，難道你還有救嗎？我列祖所毀滅的國，有歌撒、哈蘭、利色和在提．拉撒的伊甸人，這些國的神曾拯救她們嗎？哈馬的王、亞珥拔的王、西法瓦音城的王、希拿和以瓦的王，現在都在哪裡呢？”
