But I didn’t do it, for I acted to protect the honor of my name. I would not allow shame to be brought on my name among the surrounding nations who saw me reveal myself by bringing the Israelites out of Egypt.

我却为我名的缘故没有这样行，免得我名在他们所住的列国人眼前被亵渎；我领他们出埃及地，在这列国人的眼前将自己向他们显现。

我这么做是为了我名的缘故，免得我的名在他们所居住之列国眼中被亵渎；我曾在这些列国眼前向他们显现，领他们出了埃及地。

然為我名之故、別有施行、免我名見辱於其所處之國、因我顯見、導我民出埃及、彼目睹之也、

恐列國之民、以我為無能、為藐視我名、故我顯現、導之出埃及、入於曠野、使列國人目睹。

但因彼居異邦民中、故我未行是、恐我名被異邦人褻慢、蓋我已在異邦民目前、顯現於彼、導之出伊及地、

But for the sake of my name, I brought them out of Egypt. I did it to keep my name from being profaned in the eyes of the nations among whom they lived and in whose sight I had revealed myself to the Israelites.

I wanted my name to be honored. So I brought my people out of Egypt. I did it to keep my name from being treated as if it were not holy. I didn’t want this to happen in front of the nations around my people. I had made myself known to Israel in the sight of those nations.

But I acted for the sake of my name, that it should not be profaned in the sight of the nations among whom they lived, in whose sight I made myself known to them in bringing them out of the land of Egypt.

But I acted for the sake of my name, so that it would not be profaned in the eyes of the nations they were living among, in whose sight I had made myself known to Israel by bringing them out of Egypt.

But I acted for the sake of My name, that it would not be defiled in the sight of the nations among whom they lived, in whose sight I made Myself known to them by bringing them out of the land of Egypt.

But I acted for My name’s sake, that it should not be profaned before the Gentiles among whom they were, in whose sight I had made Myself known to them, to bring them out of the land of Egypt.

But I wrought for my name’s sake, that it should not be profaned in the sight of the nations, among which they were, in whose sight I made myself known unto them, in bringing them forth out of the land of Egypt.

But I acted because of My name, so that it would not be profaned in the eyes of the nations they were living among, in whose sight I had made Myself known to Israel by bringing them out of Egypt.

But I wrought for my name’s sake, that it should not be polluted before the heathen, among whom they[ were], in whose sight I made myself known unto them, in bringing them forth out of the land of Egypt.

I acted for the sake of my reputation, so that I would not be profaned before the nations among whom they lived, before whom I revealed myself by bringing them out of the land of Egypt.

But I worked for my name’s sake, that it should not be profaned in the sight of the nations, among which they were, in whose sight I made myself known to them, in bringing them out of the land of Egypt.

Nevertheless, I withdrew my judgment against them to protect the honor of my name before the nations that had seen my power in bringing them out of Egypt.

“ In this way, I will make known my holy name among my people of Israel. I will not let anyone bring shame on it. And the nations, too, will know that I am the Lord, the Holy One of Israel.

But again I held back in order to protect the honor of my name before the nations who had seen my power in bringing Israel out of Egypt.

Then I was concerned for my holy name, on which my people brought shame among the nations.“ Therefore, give the people of Israel this message from the Sovereign Lord: I am bringing you back, but not because you deserve it. I am doing it to protect my holy name, on which you brought shame while you were scattered among the nations.

Why let the Egyptians say,‘ Their God rescued them with the evil intention of slaughtering them in the mountains and wiping them from the face of the earth’? Turn away from your fierce anger. Change your mind about this terrible disaster you have threatened against your people!

For when the Canaanites and all the other people living in the land hear about it, they will surround us and wipe our name off the face of the earth. And then what will happen to the honor of your great name?”

If you destroy these people, the Egyptians will say,“ The Israelites died because the Lord wasn’t able to bring them to the land he had promised to give them.” Or they might say,“ He destroyed them because he hated them; he deliberately took them into the wilderness to slaughter them.”

Help! Who can save us from these mighty gods of Israel? They are the same gods who destroyed the Egyptians with plagues when Israel was in the wilderness.

The Lord will not abandon his people, because that would dishonor his great name. For it has pleased the Lord to make you his very own people.

I would have annihilated them, wiping out even the memory of them.But I feared the taunt of Israel’s enemy, who might misunderstand and say,“ Our own power has triumphed! The Lord had nothing to do with this!”’

For we have heard how the Lord made a dry path for you through the Red Sea when you left Egypt. And we know what you did to Sihon and Og, the two Amorite kings east of the Jordan River, whose people you completely destroyed.

But Moses objected.“ What will the Egyptians think when they hear about it?” he asked the Lord.“ They know full well the power you displayed in rescuing your people from Egypt.Now if you destroy them, the Egyptians will send a report to the inhabitants of this land, who have already heard that you live among your people. They know, Lord, that you have appeared to your people face to face and that your pillar of cloud hovers over them. They know that you go before them in the pillar of cloud by day and the pillar of fire by night.Now if you slaughter all these people with a single blow, the nations that have heard of your fame will say,‘ The Lord was not able to bring them into the land he swore to give them, so he killed them in the wilderness.’“ Please, Lord, prove that your power is as great as you have claimed. For you said,‘ The Lord is slow to anger and filled with unfailing love, forgiving every kind of sin and rebellion. But he does not excuse the guilty. He lays the sins of the parents upon their children; the entire family is affected— even children in the third and fourth generations.’In keeping with your magnificent, unfailing love, please pardon the sins of this people, just as you have forgiven them ever since they left Egypt.”Then the Lord said,“ I will pardon them as you have requested.But as surely as I live, and as surely as the earth is filled with the Lord’s glory,not one of these people will ever enter that land. They have all seen my glorious presence and the miraculous signs I performed both in Egypt and in the wilderness, but again and again they have tested me by refusing to listen to my voice.They will never even see the land I swore to give their ancestors. None of those who have treated me with contempt will ever see it.But my servant Caleb has a different attitude than the others have. He has remained loyal to me, so I will bring him into the land he explored. His descendants will possess their full share of that land.Now turn around, and don’t go on toward the land where the Amalekites and Canaanites live. Tomorrow you must set out for the wilderness in the direction of the Red Sea.”

They answered,“ Your servants have come from a very distant country. We have heard of the might of the Lord your God and of all he did in Egypt.We have also heard what he did to the two Amorite kings east of the Jordan River— King Sihon of Heshbon and King Og of Bashan( who lived in Ashtaroth).
