那时，巴比伦王的军队正攻打耶路撒冷，又攻打犹大仅存的城镇，就是拉吉和亚西加；原来犹大的坚固城只剩下这两座。西底家王与耶路撒冷的众百姓立约，要他们宣告自由，叫各人释放自己的仆人和婢女，使希伯来的男人和女人得自由，谁也不可使他的犹大弟兄作奴仆。这事以后，耶和华的话临到耶利米。

法老心里刚硬，不听摩西和亚伦，正如耶和华所说的。耶和华对摩西说：“法老心硬，不肯放百姓走。

耶和华对摩西说：“你回到埃及去的时候，要留意将我交在你手中的一切奇事行在法老面前。但我要任凭他的心刚硬，他必不放百姓走。

经上说：“今日，你们若听他的话，就不可硬着心，像在背叛之时。”

就不可硬着心，像在背叛之时，就如在旷野受试探之日。

有人报告埃及王说：“百姓逃跑了！”法老和他的臣仆对百姓改变了心意，说：“我们放以色列人走，不再服事我们，我们怎么会做这种事呢？”

他们却不留意；耸肩悖逆，耳朵发沉，不肯听从。他们的心坚硬如金刚石，不听律法和万军之耶和华藉着他的灵差遣从前先知所说的话。因此，万军之耶和华大发烈怒。

人屡次受责罚，仍然硬着颈项，他必顷刻被毁，无从医治。

人被炎热所烤，就亵渎那有权掌管这些灾难的上帝的名，他们没有悔改，也没有把荣耀归给上帝。

以法莲哪，我可以向你怎样行呢？犹大啊，我可以向你怎样做呢？因为你们的慈爱如同早晨的云雾，又如速散的露水。
