在那些日子里，他们做了一个牛犊，把祭物献给那偶像，并且因自己手所做的而欢乐。于是神转身离开，任凭他们事奉天象，正如先知书所说：‘以色列家啊，你们在旷野四十年，岂是将祭牲和祭物献给我呢？

住在地上的人为了他们的缘故，就欢喜快乐，彼此送礼，因为这两位先知曾经使他们受痛苦。

他们在各祭坛旁，躺卧在别人抵押的衣服上面；在他们神的殿中，饮用拿剥削回来的钱所买的酒。

约书亚听见人民呼喊的声音的时候，就对摩西说：“营里有战争的声音。”摩西回答：“这不是战胜的呼声，也不是战败的呼声；我听见的是歌唱的声音。”摩西走近营前的时候，看见了那牛犊，又看见了有人唱歌跳舞，他就发烈怒，把两块法版从他的手中摔掉，在山下把它们摔碎了。

“我必使你们欢乐的节期变为悲哀的日子，把你们的歌声都变为哀哭。我必使你们各人腰束麻带，头都剃光了；我必使你们悲哀，好像丧了独生子，自始至终都是痛苦的。

摩西把耶和华的一切话都记下了；清早起来，在山下筑了一座祭坛，按着以色列十二支派立了十二根柱子。又派了以色列人中的青年人去献燔祭，又向耶和华杀牛献为平安祭。
