於是，他們造了一個牛犢像，向它獻祭，並為自己所做的事沾沾自喜。因此，上帝轉臉不顧他們，任由他們祭拜日月星辰，正如先知書的記載，『以色列家啊，在曠野的四十年間，你們向我獻過祭物和供品嗎？

地上萬民便興高采烈，互相送禮道賀，因為這兩位先知曾使地上的人受苦。

約書亞聽見山下百姓嘈雜的喊叫聲，便對摩西說：「營地裡有打仗的聲音。」摩西對他說：「這不是打勝仗的聲音，也不是打敗仗的聲音，而是狂歡的聲音。」摩西走近營地的時候，看見牛犢，又看見百姓在跳舞，心中大怒，便把手上的兩塊石版摔碎在山腳下，

我要使你們的節期變為喪禮，叫你們的歡歌變為哀歌。我要使你們都腰束麻布，剃光頭髮；我要使你們傷心欲絕，如喪獨生子；我要使那日成為痛苦的日子。」

摩西把耶和華的這些話記錄下來。第二天清晨，摩西在山腳築了一座壇，立了十二根柱子代表以色列的十二支派。他又吩咐以色列的青年去給耶和華獻燔祭，又獻上公牛作平安祭。
