于是，他们造了一个牛犊像，向它献祭，并为自己所做的事沾沾自喜。因此，上帝转脸不顾他们，任由他们祭拜日月星辰，正如先知书的记载，“‘以色列家啊，在旷野的四十年间，你们向我献过祭物和供品吗？

地上万民便兴高采烈，互相送礼道贺，因为这两位先知曾使地上的人受苦。

在每座祭坛旁边，他们把穷人典当的衣服铺开，躺在上面，又在上帝的殿里喝剥削来的酒。

约书亚听见山下百姓嘈杂的喊叫声，便对摩西说：“营地里有打仗的声音。”摩西对他说：“这不是打胜仗的声音，也不是打败仗的声音，而是狂欢的声音。”摩西走近营地的时候，看见牛犊，又看见百姓在跳舞，心中大怒，便把手上的两块石版摔碎在山脚下，

我要使你们的节期变为丧礼，叫你们的欢歌变为哀歌。我要使你们都腰束麻布，剃光头发；我要使你们伤心欲绝，如丧独生子；我要使那日成为痛苦的日子。”

摩西把耶和华的这些话记录下来。第二天清晨，摩西在山脚筑了一座坛，立了十二根柱子代表以色列的十二支派。他又吩咐以色列的青年去给耶和华献燔祭，又献上公牛作平安祭。
