“ When you take a census of the Israelites to count them, each one must pay the Lord a ransom for his life at the time he is counted. Then no plague will come on them when you number them.

洗魯雅的兒子約押開始數點，卻還沒有數完。為了這事，烈怒臨到以色列，數點的數目也沒有寫在《大衛王記》上。

會中被數的人所獻的銀子，按聖所的舍客勒，一共是一百他連得，一千七百七十五舍客勒。凡曾被數的，就是二十歲以上的人，共有六十万零三千五百五十人。按聖所的舍客勒，每人半舍客勒，就是一比加。

沒有一個能贖自己的弟兄，能將贖價給上帝，

正如人子來，不是要受人的服事，乃是要服事人，並且要捨命，作多人的贖價。」

你們知道，你們得以從你們祖先傳下來虛妄的行為中救贖出來，不是靠着會朽壞的金銀等物，而是憑着基督的寶血，如同無瑕疵、無玷污的羔羊的血。

王召了耶何耶大祭司長來，對他說：「從前耶和華的僕人摩西，為法櫃的帳幕與以色列會眾所定的捐獻，你為何不叫利未人照這例向猶大和耶路撒冷徵收呢？」

三年的饑荒，或敗在敵人面前，被敵人的刀追殺三個月，或在國中三日有耶和華的刀，就是瘟疫，讓耶和華的使者在以色列全境施行毀滅呢？』現在你要想一想，我怎樣去回覆那差我來的。」

耶和華的怒氣又向以色列發作，激起大衛來對付他們，說：「去，數點以色列人和猶大人。」大衛對跟隨他的約押元帥說：「你來回走遍以色列眾支派，從但直到別是巴，數點百姓，我好知道百姓的數目。」約押對王說：「願耶和華－你的上帝使百姓的數目增加百倍，使我主我王親眼得見。我主我王何必要做這事呢？」但王堅持他對約押和眾軍官的命令。約押和眾軍官就從王面前出去，數點以色列的百姓。他們過約旦河，在迦得谷中、城的右邊亞羅珥安營，與雅謝相對。他們來到基列，到了他停‧合示地，又來到但‧雅安，繞到西頓。他們來到推羅的堡壘，以及希未人和迦南人的各城，又出來，到猶大尼革夫的別是巴。他們來回走遍全地，過了九個月又二十天，就回到耶路撒冷。約押向王報告百姓的總數：以色列拿刀的勇士有八十萬；猶大有五十萬人。大衛數點百姓以後，心中自責。大衛向耶和華說：「我做這事大大有罪了。耶和華啊，現在求你除掉僕人的罪孽，因我所做的非常愚昧。」大衛早晨起來，耶和華的話臨到迦得先知，就是大衛的先見，說：「你去告訴大衛：『耶和華如此說：我向你提出三樣，隨你選擇一樣，我好降給你。』」於是迦得來到大衛那裏告訴他，問他：「你要國中有七年的饑荒呢？或是你在敵人面前逃跑，被追趕三個月呢？或是在你國中有三日的瘟疫呢？現在你要考慮思量，我怎樣去回覆那差我來的。」大衛對迦得說：「我很為難。我們寧願落在耶和華的手裏，因為他有豐盛的憐憫；我不願落在人的手裏。」於是，耶和華降瘟疫給以色列。自早晨到所定的時候，從但直到別是巴，百姓中死了七萬人。

「你們要將以色列全會眾，按他們的父家，凡二十歲以上能出去為以色列打仗的，計算總數。」摩西和以利亞撒祭司在摩押平原與耶利哥相對的約旦河邊吩咐他們說：「計算你們中間從二十歲以上的人數。」正如耶和華所吩咐摩西的。從埃及地出來的以色列人如下：

「你要按宗族、父家、人名的數目計算以色列全會眾，數點所有的男丁。以色列中凡二十歲以上能出去打仗的，你和亞倫要按照他們的隊伍數點。每支派要有一個人，就是父家的家長跟你們一起。這是幫助你們的人的名字：屬呂便的，示丟珥的兒子以利蓿；

他獻上自己作人人的贖價；在適當的時候這事已經證實了。

不可讓憤怒觸動你，使你破口謾罵；也不可因贖價大而偏行。

上帝就施恩給他，說：『要救贖他免得下入地府，我已經得了贖價。

於是，耶和華降瘟疫給以色列，以色列中死了七萬人。

因為人子來，並不是要受人的服事，乃是要服事人，並且要捨命作多人的贖價。」
