Then Moses cried out to the Lord, and the Lord showed him a piece of wood. He threw it into the water, and the water became fit to drink. There the Lord issued a ruling and instruction for them and put them to the test.

They were left to test the Israelites to see whether they would obey the Lord’s commands, which he had given their ancestors through Moses. (niv)

Remember how the Lord your God led you all the way in the wilderness these forty years, to humble and test you in order to know what was in your heart, whether or not you would keep his commands. (niv)

Therefore this is what the Lord Almighty says:“ See, I will refine and test them, for what else can I do because of the sin of my people? (niv)

In all this you greatly rejoice, though now for a little while you may have had to suffer grief in all kinds of trials.These have come so that the proven genuineness of your faith— of greater worth than gold, which perishes even though refined by fire— may result in praise, glory and honor when Jesus Christ is revealed. The crucible for silver and the furnace for gold, but the Lord tests the heart. (niv)
