Then Moses cried out to the Lord, and the Lord showed him a piece of wood. He threw it into the water, and the water became fit to drink. There the Lord issued a ruling and instruction for them and put them to the test.

So Moses cried out to the Lord for help, and the Lord showed him a piece of wood. Moses threw it into the water, and this made the water good to drink. It was there at Marah that the Lord set before them the following decree as a standard to test their faithfulness to him.

耶和华留下这几个外族是要考验以色列人，看他们是否愿意遵从祂借摩西向他们祖先颁布的诫命。

以色列人看见法老大军追了上来，非常害怕，便呼求耶和华。

要记住这四十年来你们的上帝耶和华怎样在旷野引领你们，祂磨炼你们、考验你们，好知道你们的心意如何、肯不肯遵守祂的诫命。

耶和华对摩西说：“我要从天上降下食物给你们。百姓可以每天出去拾取他们当天所需的分量，这样我就可以试验他们是否遵行我的训诲。

上帝啊，你试验我们，熬炼我们如熬炼银子。

耶和华为了考验那些没有经历过迦南战事的以色列人，让他们学习作战，就留下了以下各族：

我要借此试验以色列人，看他们是否像他们祖先一样谨遵我的道。”

在旷野中把你们祖先从未见过的吗哪赐给你们吃，为要磨炼你们、考验你们，使你们最终得到益处。

以利沙说：“拿点面粉来。”他把面粉撒在锅里，说：“倒出来给众人喝吧。”于是，汤里没有毒了。

摩西就呼求耶和华说：“我拿这些百姓怎么办？他们准备拿石块打死我！”

以利沙走到水源那里，把盐倒在水中说：“耶和华说，‘我洁净了这水，从此它不会再使人死亡，也不会再使土地贫瘠。’”

祂的祭司中有摩西和亚伦，呼求祂的人中有撒母耳。他们求告耶和华，祂就应允他们。

你们也不可听从他们。因为这是你们的上帝耶和华在试验你们，要看看你们是否全心全意地爱祂。

因为十字架之道在将要灭亡的人看来是愚昧的，但对我们这些得救的人来说却是上帝的大能，

民众答道：“不，我们一定要事奉耶和华。”约书亚说：“现在你们自己作证，你们已选择事奉耶和华。”民众答道：“我们愿意自己作证。”约书亚说：“这样，你们现在就要摒弃你们中间的外族神明，专心归向以色列的上帝耶和华。”民众答道：“我们必事奉我们的上帝耶和华，听从祂的话。”当天约书亚与民众立约，在示剑为他们订立律例和典章。

耶和华对我说：“就算摩西和撒母耳站在我面前求情，我也不会怜悯这些百姓。你把他们从我面前赶走吧！

你在苦难中向我呼求，我就拯救了你，从雷声隆隆的密云中应允了你。我在米利巴泉边考验你。（细拉）

因此，万军之耶和华说：“看啊，我要熬炼、试验这些罪恶的子民，除此之外，我别无选择。

他求告我，我就答应他；他遭遇患难，我必与他同在。我必拯救他，赐他尊贵的地位。

为此，即使现今你们必须暂时在百般试炼中忍受痛苦，也要满怀喜乐。这样，你们的信心经过试验便显明是真实的，比那经过火炼仍会坏掉的金子更加宝贵，使你们可以在耶稣基督显现时得到称赞、荣耀和尊贵。

鼎炼银，炉炼金，耶和华试炼人心。

在患难中呼求我，我必拯救你，你必尊崇我。”
