The king’s edict granted the Jews in every city the right to assemble and protect themselves; to destroy, kill and annihilate the armed men of any nationality or province who might attack them and their women and children, and to plunder the property of their enemies.

The Jews in every city could now gather together and fight for their lives. The king’s order gave them that right. But suppose soldiers from any nation or territory attacked them, their women or children. Then the Jews could destroy, kill and wipe out those soldiers. They could also take the goods that belonged to their enemies.

Letters were sent by the runners to all the king’s provinces stating that they should destroy, kill, and annihilate all the Jews, from youth to elderly, both women and children, on a particular day, namely the thirteenth day of the twelfth month( that is, the month of Adar), and to loot and plunder their possessions.

They will not need to take wood from the field or cut down trees from the forests, because they will make fires with the weapons. They will take the loot from those who looted them and seize the plunder of those who plundered them, declares the sovereign LORD.

Evil men draw their swords and prepare their bows, to bring down the oppressed and needy, and to slaughter those who are godly.Their swords will pierce their own hearts, and their bows will be broken.

The Jews assembled themselves in their cities throughout all the provinces of King Ahasuerus to strike out against those who were seeking their harm. No one was able to stand before them, for dread of them fell on all the peoples.All the officials of the provinces, the satraps, the governors and those who performed the king’s business were assisting the Jews, for the dread of Mordecai had fallen on them.Mordecai was of high rank in the king’s palace, and word about him was spreading throughout all the provinces. His influence continued to become greater and greater.The Jews struck all their enemies with the sword, bringing death and destruction, and they did as they pleased with their enemies.In Susa the citadel the Jews killed and destroyed five hundred men.In addition, they also killed Parshandatha, Dalphon, Aspatha,Poratha, Adalia, Aridatha,Parmashta, Arisai, Aridai, and Vaizatha,the ten sons of Haman son of Hammedatha, the enemy of the Jews. But they did not confiscate their property.On that same day the number of those killed in Susa the citadel was brought to the king’s attention.Then the king said to Queen Esther,“ In Susa the citadel the Jews have killed and destroyed five hundred men and the ten sons of Haman! What then have they done in the rest of the king’s provinces? What is your request? It shall be given to you. What other petition do you have? It shall be done.”Esther replied,“ If the king is so inclined, let the Jews who are in Susa be permitted to act tomorrow also according to today’s law, and let them hang the ten sons of Haman on the gallows.”So the king issued orders for this to be done. A law was passed in Susa, and the ten sons of Haman were hanged.The Jews who were in Susa then assembled on the fourteenth day of the month of Adar, and they killed three hundred men in Susa. But they did not confiscate their property.The rest of the Jews who were throughout the provinces of the king assembled in order to stand up for themselves and to have rest from their enemies. They killed seventy-five thousand of their adversaries, but they did not confiscate their property.

O daughter Babylon, soon to be devastated! How blessed will be the one who repays you for what you dished out to us!

The LORD releases the imprisoned.The LORD gives sight to the blind. The LORD lifts up all who are bent over. The LORD loves the godly.The LORD protects those residing outside their native land; he lifts up the fatherless and the widow, but he opposes the wicked.

I sent him against a godless nation, I ordered him to attack the people with whom I was angry, to take plunder and to carry away loot, to trample them down like dirt in the streets.

But the godly are happy; they rejoice before God and are overcome with joy.
