“ Go, gather together all the Jews who are in Susa, and fast for me. Do not eat or drink for three days, night or day. I and my attendants will fast as you do. When this is done, I will go to the king, even though it is against the law. And if I perish, I perish.”

但我不為性命作甚麼計算，而看為對自己有價值；比較起來，倒不如完盡了我的跑程、和我從主耶穌所領受的執事職任，鄭重證明上帝恩惠之福音。

約沙法懼怕，便咬緊牙根要尋求永恆主；在猶大全地宣告禁食。

永恆主發神諭說：『如今雖如此，你們還要全心全意來歸向我，以禁食哀哭及號咷來返回。你們要撕裂的是心，倒不是衣服。』要回歸永恆主你們的上帝；因為他有恩惠有憐憫，他不輕易發怒，而有豐盛的堅愛，他並且能改變心意、不降災禍。或者他能回轉、改變心意，留下餘剩的祝福，留下獻素祭奠祭給永恆主你們的上帝的機會、也未可知。在錫安吹號角哦！要行聖禮擬定禁食，宣告聖節會哦；要聚集人民，使大眾潔淨自己為聖；要招聚老年人，聚集孩童，以及在母懷嗍奶的；要叫新郎出洞房，叫新婦離開內室。伺候永恆主的祭司須要在廊子和祭壇之間哭泣，說：『永恆主啊，顧惜你人民哦！不要讓你的產業被羞辱，而在列國中令人談笑哦。為甚麼容人在列族之民中譏刺說：「他們的上帝在哪裏呢？」』

因為凡想要救自己性命的，必失掉性命；凡為我失掉自己性命的，必救得真性命。

我和他知交，是要叫他吩咐他的子孫、和他以後的家屬一直走我永恆主的道路，秉公行義，為要使永恆主指着亞伯拉罕所應許的話都歸給他。』

倘若你們以事奉永恆主為不好，那麼你們今日就可以選擇你們所要事奉的：到底是你們列祖在大河那邊所事奉的神呢？還是你們住於其地的亞摩利人的神呢？至於我和我的家呢、我們是必定事奉永恆主的。』

約拿便進城；走着一天的行程，直宣告說：『再過四十天，尼尼微就覆滅了。』尼尼微人信了上帝，便宣告禁食，從最大的到至小的都穿着麻衣。這消息傳到尼尼微王那裏，他就從寶座上起來，脫下朝服，披上麻布，坐在爐灰中。又出通告傳遍尼尼微說：『王和大臣有諭旨說：人和牲口、牛羣羊羣、甚麼都不可嘗，草不可喫，水也不可喝。人和牲口都要披上麻布；要極力呼求上帝；各人要回轉過來、離開他的壞行徑，丟棄手中的強暴；或者上帝改變初衷，回心轉意、不發烈怒，使我們不至於滅亡，也未可知。』

要行聖禮擬定禁食，宣告聖節會哦；要聚集眾長老、國中一切居民到你們的上帝永恆主的殿，向永恆主哀呼哦。有禍啊那日！因為永恆主的日子臨近了，就像毁滅出於毁滅者。

願全能的上帝使你們在那人面前蒙憐憫，叫他把你們那弟兄和便雅憫送還給你們：那我就是喪了兒子，就喪了罷。』

第三天、以斯帖穿上朝服，在王宮的內院、對着王殿站着。王在王殿對着殿門、在王位上坐着。

你只要剛強；我們都要為我們的人民和我們的上帝的城市而奮勇；願永恆主按他所看為好的而行。』

曾經為我的性命、將自己的脖子冒險不顧。不但我感謝他們，就是外國的眾教會也都感謝他們。

當那日子、主萬軍之永恆主叫人哀哭號咷，頭上光禿，腰束麻布；

因為他為了基督的工作、曾至於與死相近，冒着性命之險，以彌補你們在供奉我的事上所虧缺的。

他三天不能看見，沒有喫，也沒有喝。

從那時直到天快亮、保羅直勸眾人用飯，說：『你們期待着、一直不喫，不取用甚麼，今天第十四天了。

約拿怎樣三晝三夜在大魚腹中，人子也必怎樣三晝三夜在地心裏。

於是保羅回答說：『你們幹麼哭、使我心碎呢？為了主耶穌的名、不但被捆綁、就是死在耶路撒冷、我都準備作的。』

他冒險拚命擊殺了那非利士人，永恆主就向以色列眾人大行拯救；那時你看見，也很歡喜；現在你為甚麼要無緣無故殺死大衛，流無辜人的血、來犯罪呢？』

向他說話的天使離開了之後，哥尼流便叫了兩個家僕、和常伺候他的一個敬虔的兵來，
