以掃聽了他父親所說的話，就發極大極慘苦的聲音，連連哀叫，對他父親說：『我父啊，也給我吧，給我祝福吧。』

他說『哥拉汛哪，你有禍啊！伯賽大啊，你有禍啊！因為在你們中間所行過的異能，若行在推羅西頓，他們早就披麻撒灰悔改了。

約伯便起來，撕裂外袍，剪了頭髮，伏在地上敬拜，

約拿便進城；走着一天的行程，直宣告說：『再過四十天，尼尼微就覆滅了。』尼尼微人信了上帝，便宣告禁食，從最大的到至小的都穿着麻衣。這消息傳到尼尼微王那裏，他就從寶座上起來，脫下朝服，披上麻布，坐在爐灰中。又出通告傳遍尼尼微說：『王和大臣有諭旨說：人和牲口、牛羣羊羣、甚麼都不可嘗，草不可喫，水也不可喝。人和牲口都要披上麻布；要極力呼求上帝；各人要回轉過來、離開他的壞行徑，丟棄手中的強暴；或者上帝改變初衷，回心轉意、不發烈怒，使我們不至於滅亡，也未可知。』

所以我說：『你們請轉眼、別注視着我！讓我苦苦地哭一頓吧！不要因我眾民之毁滅，你們就急地來安慰我。』

因此我必嚎咷哀號，光腳裸體而行；我必號咷像野狗，哀鳴如鴕鳥。

永恆主的大日子臨近了，臨近而來得極快；永恆主的日子比奔跑的人輕快，比勇士迅速。

約書亞便撕裂衣裳；他和以色列長老、在永恆主的櫃前面、臉伏於地、直到晚上，也把塵土撒在頭上。

約伯拿瓦片去刮身體；坐在爐灰中。

故此人子啊，你要歎息，在他們眼前腰骨折地歎息，苦苦地歎息。

哈曼對亞哈隨魯王說：『有一族之民散居在王國內各省各族之民間，而又自己隔開：他們的法例跟各族的法例不同；王的法例他們也不遵行；所以由着他們、對於王最不妥當。王若以為好，就請寫下勅令殺滅他們；我就秤出一萬擔銀子，由管事人經手、運入王的府庫。』於是王脫下了手上的打印戒指，給猶大人的敵人、亞甲族哈米大他的兒子哈曼。對哈曼說：『這銀子仍賜給你，這人民也交給你，你看怎樣好，就怎麼待他們好啦。』正月十三日王的書記們就被召了來，照哈曼一切所吩咐的，寫下了勅令、給王的眾藩臣，給一省一省的巡撫，給一族一族的首領；一省一省用自己的文字，一族一族用自己的方言；奉亞哈隨魯王的名寫的，又用王的打印戒指蓋上了印的。詔書由跑文書的人經手送到王的各省，說要在一日之間、在十二月、就是亞達月、十三日，將所有的猶大人、無論老少幼小或婦女、全都消滅屠殺滅盡，並且奪取他們的資財作為掠物。

我所選擇、使人刻苦自己的日子難道是這樣的禁食麼？難道只是叫人垂頭像燈心草，拿麻布和爐灰當床鋪麼？難道你要把這樣叫做禁食，作為使永恆主悅納的日子麼？我所選擇的真禁食豈不是以下這些行為：
