When Mordecai learned of all that had been done, he tore his clothes, put on sackcloth and ashes, and went out into the city, wailing loudly and bitterly.

Mordecai found out about everything that had been done. So he tore his clothes. He put on the rough clothing people wear when they’re sad. He sat down in ashes. Then he went out into the city. He wept out loud. He cried bitter tears.

這麼多的財富，竟然在一時之間就化為烏有了！」所有的船長、所有到處航行的人、水手們、所有靠海為業的人，都遠遠地站著。他們看著焚燒她時的煙，呼喊說：「哪一個城能與這大城相比呢？」他們把塵土撒在自己頭上，哭泣、悲傷，呼喊說：「有禍了！有禍了！宏大的城，所有靠著她在海上有船隻的人都因她的財富發了財。她竟然在一時之間就化為烏有了！

以掃聽了他父親的話，就極其痛苦地號啕大哭，對父親說：「我父啊，祝福我，也祝福我吧！」

「哥拉汛哪，你有禍了！伯賽達呀，你有禍了！因為在你們當中行過的神蹟，如果行在提爾和西頓，那裡的人早就會披麻蒙灰悔改了。

約拿開始進入那城，走了一天的路程，宣告說：「再過四十天，尼尼微就要覆滅了。」尼尼微人就相信神，並宣告禁食，無論尊貴的或卑微的，都披上麻布。這話語傳到尼尼微王的時候，他從自己的寶座上起來，從身上脫下王袍，披上麻布，坐在灰燼中。然後他頒布諭令，說：「在尼尼微，王和大臣有令：『無論人或牲畜，牛或羊，都不可嘗什麼，不可吃什麼，也不可喝水。人和牲畜都當披上麻布；各人都當迫切地向神呼求，從自己邪惡的道路上、自己手裡的殘暴中轉回。或許神會轉回、施憐憫，從他猛烈的怒氣中轉回，使我們不致滅亡。』」

因此我說：「請你轉眼別看我，讓我痛哭吧！不要因我子民的毀滅而強行安慰我！」

希實本和以利亞利哀鳴，他們的聲音遠到雅匝也能聽見。因此摩押的士兵大聲喊叫，心驚膽戰。

巴拿巴和保羅兩位使徒聽見這事，就撕裂自己的衣服，衝進人群裡面，

那時在各個省，在王令和他的法令所傳到的地方，猶太人都大大哀慟；他們禁食、哭泣、哀號，許多人躺在麻布和灰燼上。

哈曼對亞哈隨魯王說：「有一個民族被打散，分散在你全國各省各民族之間；他們的法令與其他所有民族的都不相同，他們也不遵行王的法令，所以留下他們對王無益。如果王認為好，就請王下旨消滅他們；我將捐出一萬他連得銀子，交在管理國務的人手中，歸入國庫。」於是王從自己手上取下印戒，交給亞甲人哈米達塔的兒子哈曼——猶太人的敵人。王對哈曼說：「那銀子歸於你，這民族也歸於你；你看怎樣好，就怎樣處置他們吧！」一月十三日，王的書記們被召來，照著哈曼所吩咐的一切，給王的行政官們、管理各省的省長和各民族的首領下旨，用各省的文字給各個省，用各民族的語言給各個民族，以亞哈隨魯王的名義下旨，又用王的印戒封印。詔書藉著信使們的手傳送給王的各省：要各省在十二月（亞達月）十三日，一天之內，把所有的猶太人，無論老少、孩童或婦女，都除滅、擊殺、消滅，並且掠奪他們的財物。

難道這就是我所喜悅的禁食，這就是讓人刻苦己心的日子嗎？難道是讓人像蘆葦一樣垂著頭，以麻布和灰燼為鋪嗎？難道這就是你所謂的禁食，這就是耶和華所悅納的日子嗎？
