“ Honor your father and mother,” which is the first commandment accompanied by a promise, namely,

敬爾父母、此為寓許之首誡、

以福許人之首誡、曰、敬爾父母、

敬爾父母、此為首誡有應許者、

孝順父母、此天職也。

“ Honor your father and mother,” which is the first commandment with a promise:

“ Honor your father and your mother, that you may live a long time in the land the LORD your God is giving to you.

‘ Cursed is the one who disrespects his father and mother.’ Then all the people will say,‘ Amen!’

Then Jeremiah spoke to the Rechabite community,“ The LORD God of Israel who rules over all says,‘ You have obeyed the orders of your ancestor Jonadab. You have followed all his instructions. You have done exactly as he commanded you.’

The one who curses his father and his mother, his lamp will be extinguished in the blackest darkness.

For God said,‘ Honor your father and mother’ and‘ Whoever insults his father or mother must be put to death.’But you say,‘ If someone tells his father or mother,“ Whatever help you would have received from me is given to God,”he does not need to honor his father.’ You have nullified the word of God on account of your tradition.

Pay everyone what is owed: taxes to whom taxes are due, revenue to whom revenue is due, respect to whom respect is due, honor to whom honor is due.

He also said to them,“ You neatly reject the commandment of God in order to set up your tradition.For Moses said,‘ Honor your father and your mother,’ and,‘ Whoever insults his father or mother must be put to death.’But you say that if anyone tells his father or mother,‘ Whatever help you would have received from me is corban’( that is, a gift for God),then you no longer permit him to do anything for his father or mother.Thus you nullify the word of God by your tradition that you have handed down. And you do many things like this.”

“ A son naturally honors his father and a slave respects his master. If I am your father, where is my honor? If I am your master, where is my respect? The LORD who rules over all asks you this, you priests who make light of my name! But you reply,‘ How have we made light of your name?’

They have treated father and mother with contempt within you; they have oppressed the foreigner among you; they have wronged the orphan and the widow within you.
