All share a common destiny— the righteous and the wicked, the good and the bad, the clean and the unclean, those who offer sacrifices and those who do not. As it is with the good, so with the sinful; as it is with those who take oaths, so with those who are afraid to take them.

Everyone will die someday. Death comes to godly and sinful people alike. It comes to good and bad people alike. It comes to“ clean” and“ unclean” people alike. Those who offer sacrifices and those who don’t offer them also die. A good person dies, and so does a sinner. Those who make promises die. So do those who are afraid to make them.

It is the same for all, since the same event happens to the righteous and the wicked, to the good and the evil, to the clean and the unclean, to him who sacrifices and him who does not sacrifice. As the good one is, so is the sinner, and he who swears is as he who shuns an oath.

The same destiny ultimately awaits everyone, whether righteous or wicked, good or bad, ceremonially clean or unclean, religious or irreligious. Good people receive the same treatment as sinners, and people who make promises to God are treated like people who don’t.

What happens to the good person, also happens to the sinner; what happens to those who make vows, also happens to those who are afraid to make vows.

Then you shall return and discern between the righteous and the wicked, between him who serves God and him who doesn’t serve him.

The wise man’s eyes are in his head, and the fool walks in darkness— and yet I perceived that one event happens to them all.Then I said in my heart,“ As it happens to the fool, so will it happen even to me; and why was I then more wise?” Then I said in my heart that this also is vanity.For of the wise man, even as of the fool, there is no memory forever, since in the days to come all will have been long forgotten. Indeed, the wise man must die just like the fool!

“ It is all the same. Therefore I say he destroys the blameless and the wicked.

I will come near to you to judgment; and I will be a swift witness against the sorcerers, and against the adulterers, and against the perjurers, and against those who oppress the hireling in his wages, the widow, and the fatherless, and who deprive the foreigner of justice, and don’t fear me,” says Yahweh of Armies.

For I was envious of the arrogant, when I saw the prosperity of the wicked.

The men said to her,“ We will be guiltless of this your oath which you’ve made us to swear.Behold, when we come into the land, tie this line of scarlet thread in the window which you used to let us down. Gather to yourself into the house your father, your mother, your brothers, and all your father’s household.It shall be that whoever goes out of the doors of your house into the street, his blood will be on his head, and we will be guiltless. Whoever is with you in the house, his blood shall be on our head, if any hand is on him.But if you talk about this business of ours, then we shall be guiltless of your oath which you’ve made us to swear.”

It is good that you should take hold of this. Yes, also don’t withdraw your hand from that; for he who fears God will come out of them all.

Though a sinner commits crimes a hundred times, and lives long, yet surely I know that it will be better with those who fear God, who are reverent before him.But it shall not be well with the wicked, neither shall he lengthen days like a shadow, because he doesn’t fear God.There is a vanity which is done on the earth, that there are righteous men to whom it happens according to the work of the wicked. Again, there are wicked men to whom it happens according to the work of the righteous. I said that this also is vanity.

For to the man who pleases him, God gives wisdom, knowledge, and joy; but to the sinner he gives travail, to gather and to heap up, that he may give to him who pleases God. This also is vanity and a chasing after wind.

It is better to go to the house of mourning than to go to the house of feasting; for that is the end of all men, and the living should take this to heart.

Then he said to me,“ This is the curse that goes out over the surface of the whole land; for everyone who steals shall be cut off according to it on the one side; and everyone who swears falsely shall be cut off according to it on the other side.I will cause it to go out,” says Yahweh of Armies,“ and it will enter into the house of the thief, and into the house of him who swears falsely by my name; and it will remain in the middle of his house, and will destroy it with its timber and its stones.”

“ Why do the wicked live, become old, yes, and grow mighty in power?Their child is established with them in their sight, their offspring before their eyes.Their houses are safe from fear, neither is the rod of God upon them.Their bulls breed without fail. Their cows calve, and don’t miscarry.They send out their little ones like a flock. Their children dance.They sing to the tambourine and harp, and rejoice at the sound of the pipe.They spend their days in prosperity. In an instant they go down to Sheol.They tell God,‘ Depart from us, for we don’t want to know about your ways.What is the Almighty, that we should serve him? What profit should we have, if we pray to him?’Behold, their prosperity is not in their hand. The counsel of the wicked is far from me.“ How often is it that the lamp of the wicked is put out, that their calamity comes on them, that God distributes sorrows in his anger?How often is it that they are as stubble before the wind, as chaff that the storm carries away?You say,‘ God lays up his iniquity for his children.’ Let him recompense it to himself, that he may know it.Let his own eyes see his destruction. Let him drink of the wrath of the Almighty.For what does he care for his house after him, when the number of his months is cut off?“ Shall any teach God knowledge, since he judges those who are high?One dies in his full strength, being wholly at ease and quiet.His pails are full of milk. The marrow of his bones is moistened.Another dies in bitterness of soul, and never tastes of good.They lie down alike in the dust. The worm covers them.“ Behold, I know your thoughts, the plans with which you would wrong me.For you say,‘ Where is the house of the prince? Where is the tent in which the wicked lived?’Haven’t you asked wayfaring men? Don’t you know their evidences,that the evil man is reserved to the day of calamity, That they are led out to the day of wrath?Who will declare his way to his face? Who will repay him what he has done?Yet he will be borne to the grave. Men will keep watch over the tomb.The clods of the valley will be sweet to him. All men will draw after him, as there were innumerable before him.So how can you comfort me with nonsense, because in your answers there remains only falsehood?”

For he has despised the oath by breaking the covenant; and behold, he had given his hand, and yet has done all these things. He won’t escape.“ Therefore the Lord Yahweh says:‘ As I live, I will surely bring on his own head my oath that he has despised and my covenant that he has broken.

I will make you swear by Yahweh, the God of heaven and the God of the earth, that you shall not take a wife for my son of the daughters of the Canaanites, among whom I live.

Yes, though he live a thousand years twice told, and yet fails to enjoy good, don’t all go to one place?

Now we call the proud happy; yes, those who work wickedness are built up; yes, they tempt God, and escape.’

If the woman isn’t willing to follow you, then you shall be clear from this oath to me. Only you shall not bring my son there again.”The servant put his hand under the thigh of Abraham his master, and swore to him concerning this matter.

When the people had come to the forest, behold, honey was dripping, but no one put his hand to his mouth; for the people feared the oath.
