I returned, and saw under the sun, that the race[ is] not to the swift, nor the battle to the strong, neither yet bread to the wise, nor yet riches to men of understanding, nor yet favour to men of skill; but time and chance happeneth to them all.

I have seen something else under the sun: The race is not to the swift or the battle to the strong, nor does food come to the wise or wealth to the brilliant or favor to the learned; but time and chance happen to them all.

Here’s something else I’ve seen on this earth. Races aren’t always won by those who run fast. Battles aren’t always won by those who are strong. Wise people don’t always have plenty of food. Clever people aren’t always wealthy. Those who have learned a lot aren’t always successful. God controls the timing of every event. He also controls how things turn out.

Again I saw that under the sun the race is not to the swift, nor the battle to the strong, nor bread to the wise, nor riches to the intelligent, nor favor to those with knowledge, but time and chance happen to them all.

I have observed something else under the sun. The fastest runner doesn’t always win the race, and the strongest warrior doesn’t always win the battle. The wise sometimes go hungry, and the skillful are not necessarily wealthy. And those who are educated don’t always lead successful lives. It is all decided by chance, by being in the right place at the right time.

[ There is] no wisdom nor understanding nor counsel against the LORD.The horse[ is] prepared against the day of battle: but safety[ is] of the LORD.

Who[ is] he[ that] saith, and it cometh to pass,[ when] the Lord commandeth[ it] not?Out of the mouth of the most High proceedeth not evil and good?

To set up on high those that be low; that those which mourn may be exalted to safety.He disappointeth the devices of the crafty, so that their hands cannot perform[ their] enterprise.He taketh the wise in their own craftiness: and the counsel of the froward is carried headlong.They meet with darkness in the daytime, and grope in the noonday as in the night.

Therefore the flight shall perish from the swift, and the strong shall not strengthen his force, neither shall the mighty deliver himself:Neither shall he stand that handleth the bow; and[ he that is] swift of foot shall not deliver[ himself]: neither shall he that rideth the horse deliver himself.And[ he that is] courageous among the mighty shall flee away naked in that day, saith the LORD.

I said in mine heart, God shall judge the righteous and the wicked: for[ there is] a time there for every purpose and for every work.

And he said, Hearken ye, all Judah, and ye inhabitants of Jerusalem, and thou king Jehoshaphat, Thus saith the LORD unto you, Be not afraid nor dismayed by reason of this great multitude; for the battle[ is] not yours, but God’s.

Let not the swift flee away, nor the mighty man escape; they shall stumble, and fall toward the north by the river Euphrates.

There is no king saved by the multitude of an host: a mighty man is not delivered by much strength.An horse[ is] a vain thing for safety: neither shall he deliver[ any] by his great strength.

He delighteth not in the strength of the horse: he taketh not pleasure in the legs of a man.The LORD taketh pleasure in them that fear him, in those that hope in his mercy.

The wise man’s eyes[ are] in his head; but the fool walketh in darkness: and I myself perceived also that one event happeneth to them all.Then said I in my heart, As it happeneth to the fool, so it happeneth even to me; and why was I then more wise? Then I said in my heart, that this also[ is] vanity.

Again, I considered all travail, and every right work, that for this a man is envied of his neighbour. This[ is] also vanity and vexation of spirit.

And when Ahithophel saw that his counsel was not followed, he saddled[ his] ass, and arose, and gat him home to his house, to his city, and put his household in order, and hanged himself, and died, and was buried in the sepulchre of his father.

And Absalom and all the men of Israel said, The counsel of Hushai the Archite[ is] better than the counsel of Ahithophel. For the LORD had appointed to defeat the good counsel of Ahithophel, to the intent that the LORD might bring evil upon Absalom.

So I returned, and considered all the oppressions that are done under the sun: and behold the tears of[ such as were] oppressed, and they had no comforter; and on the side of their oppressors[ there was] power; but they had no comforter.

And I turned myself to behold wisdom, and madness, and folly: for what[ can] the man[ do] that cometh after the king?[ even] that which hath been already done.

Talk no more so exceeding proudly; let[ not] arrogancy come out of your mouth: for the LORD[ is] a God of knowledge, and by him actions are weighed.The bows of the mighty men[ are] broken, and they that stumbled are girded with strength.[ They that were] full have hired out themselves for bread; and[ they that were] hungry ceased: so that the barren hath born seven; and she that hath many children is waxed feeble.The LORD killeth, and maketh alive: he bringeth down to the grave, and bringeth up.The LORD maketh poor, and maketh rich: he bringeth low, and lifteth up.He raiseth up the poor out of the dust,[ and] lifteth up the beggar from the dunghill, to set[ them] among princes, and to make them inherit the throne of glory: for the pillars of the earth[ are] the LORD’S, and he hath set the world upon them.He will keep the feet of his saints, and the wicked shall be silent in darkness; for by strength shall no man prevail.The adversaries of the LORD shall be broken to pieces; out of heaven shall he thunder upon them: the LORD shall judge the ends of the earth; and he shall give strength unto his king, and exalt the horn of his anointed.

In whom also we have obtained an inheritance, being predestinated according to the purpose of him who worketh all things after the counsel of his own will:

Consider the work of God: for who can make[ that] straight, which he hath made crooked?

Then shall ye return, and discern between the righteous and the wicked, between him that serveth God and him that serveth him not.

When he giveth quietness, who then can make trouble? and when he hideth[ his] face, who then can behold him? whether[ it be done] against a nation, or against a man only:

And all the inhabitants of the earth[ are] reputed as nothing: and he doeth according to his will in the army of heaven, and[ among] the inhabitants of the earth: and none can stay his hand, or say unto him, What doest thou?

And there were three sons of Zeruiah there, Joab, and Abishai, and Asahel: and Asahel[ was as] light of foot as a wild roe.And Asahel pursued after Abner; and in going he turned not to the right hand nor to the left from following Abner.Then Abner looked behind him, and said,[ Art] thou Asahel? And he answered, I[ am].And Abner said to him, Turn thee aside to thy right hand or to thy left, and lay thee hold on one of the young men, and take thee his armour. But Asahel would not turn aside from following of him.And Abner said again to Asahel, Turn thee aside from following me: wherefore should I smite thee to the ground? how then should I hold up my face to Joab thy brother?Howbeit he refused to turn aside: wherefore Abner with the hinder end of the spear smote him under the fifth[ rib], that the spear came out behind him; and he fell down there, and died in the same place: and it came to pass,[ that] as many as came to the place where Asahel fell down and died stood still.

So David prevailed over the Philistine with a sling and with a stone, and smote the Philistine, and slew him; but[ there was] no sword in the hand of David.
