我又轉念：見日光之下，快跑的未必能贏；力戰的未必得勝；智慧的未必得糧食；明哲的未必得資財；靈巧的未必得喜悅。所臨到眾人的是在乎當時的機會。

我轉眼又看到日光之下：快跑的未必賽贏，勇士未必戰勝，有智慧的未必得糧食，有悟性的未必得財富，明智者未必得恩惠；因為時機和機遇勝過一切。

我轉觀日下、疾趨者未必先至、力戰者未必獲勝、智者未必得食、達者未必得財、有技能者未必蒙恩寵、凡事皆由時勢而成、

我又遍覽天下事、疾趨未必先至、勁旅未必獲捷、有智未必得餱糧、聰明未必得貨財、機巧未必沐恩寵、凡百之事、悉由偶然而至。

我又觀日下之事、見疾趨者未必先至、有力者未必得勝、智者未必得食、哲者未必得財、有識者未必蒙恩、凡眾所遇、或隨時會、或屬偶然、

I have seen something else under the sun: The race is not to the swift or the battle to the strong, nor does food come to the wise or wealth to the brilliant or favor to the learned; but time and chance happen to them all.

Here’s something else I’ve seen on this earth. Races aren’t always won by those who run fast. Battles aren’t always won by those who are strong. Wise people don’t always have plenty of food. Clever people aren’t always wealthy. Those who have learned a lot aren’t always successful. God controls the timing of every event. He also controls how things turn out.

Again I saw that under the sun the race is not to the swift, nor the battle to the strong, nor bread to the wise, nor riches to the intelligent, nor favor to those with knowledge, but time and chance happen to them all.

I have observed something else under the sun. The fastest runner doesn’t always win the race, and the strongest warrior doesn’t always win the battle. The wise sometimes go hungry, and the skillful are not necessarily wealthy. And those who are educated don’t always lead successful lives. It is all decided by chance, by being in the right place at the right time.

Again I saw under the sun that the race is not to the swift, or the battle to the strong, or bread to the wise, or riches to the discerning, or favor to the skillful; rather, time and chance happen to all of them.

I again saw under the sun that the race is not to the swift and the battle is not to the warriors, and neither is bread to the wise nor wealth to the discerning, nor favor to the skillful; for time and chance overtake them all.

耶和華這樣說：“智慧人不可誇耀自己的智慧，勇士不可誇耀自己的勇力，財主不可誇耀自己的財富。

任何智慧、聰明、謀略都不能敵擋耶和華。馬是為打仗之日預備的，勝利卻在於耶和華。

除非主命定，誰能說成，就成了呢？或禍或福，不都是出於至高者的口嗎？

把低微的安置在高位，把哀慟的高舉於安穩之處；又挫敗狡猾人的計謀，使他們的手所作的無法成全；他使有智慧的人中了自己的詭計，使奸詐人的謀算快快失敗。他們白天遇見黑暗，中午摸索如在夜間。

行動迅速的不能逃走，強而有力的不能施展他的勇力，勇士也不能救自己；拿弓的人站立不住，跑得快的不能逃走，騎馬的也不能救自己。到那日，最勇敢的戰士，也是赤身逃跑。’這是耶和華的宣告。”

我自己心裡說：“神必審判義人和惡人，因為各樣事務、各樣工作都有定時。”

他就說：“全猶大的人、耶路撒冷的居民和約沙法王啊，你們要留意！耶和華這樣對你們說：‘你們不要因這大軍懼怕和驚慌，因為戰爭的勝負不是在於你們，而是在於神。

我知道神所作的一切，都必永存，無可增添，無可減少；神這樣作，為要使人在他面前存敬畏的心。

“快跑的跑不掉，勇士也不能逃脫；他們在北方、在幼發拉底河邊，都絆跌仆倒。

君王不是因兵多得勝，勇士不是因力大得救。想靠馬得勝是枉然的；馬雖然力大，也不能救人。

他喜歡的不是馬的力大，他喜悅的不是人的腿快。耶和華喜悅敬畏他的人，喜悅仰望他慈愛的人。

智慧人的眼目明亮，愚昧人卻走在黑暗中。我也知道同一的命運要臨到這兩種人身上。我自己心裡說：“臨到愚昧人身上的，也必臨到我身上；那麼，我為甚麼要更有智慧呢？”於是我心裡說：“這也是虛空。”

我看見各樣的勞碌和各樣精巧的工作，都是出於人與人彼此的競爭。這也是虛空，也是捕風。

亞希多弗見自己的謀略不被採納，就預備了驢子，起程往本城自己的家去。他安排好了家裡的事，就上吊死了，埋葬在他父親的墳墓裡。

押沙龍和以色列眾人都說：“亞基人戶篩的謀略比亞希多弗的好。”因為耶和華定意要破壞亞希多弗的好計謀，為要降災禍給押沙龍。

我又看見日光之下所發生一切欺壓的事：受欺壓的流淚，卻無人安慰他們；欺壓他們的，手裡握著權柄，因此無人安慰受欺壓的。

我轉過來觀察智慧、狂妄和愚昧。王的繼承人還能作甚麼呢？只不過作先前作過的罷了。

你們不要多說驕傲的話，也不要口出狂妄之言，因為耶和華是全知的神，人的一切行為他都鑒察。勇士的弓都被折斷，跌倒的人卻以力量束腰。飽足的，要勞碌覓食，飢餓的，不再飢餓；不能生育的，生了七個兒女，有過許多兒女的，反倒衰微。耶和華使人死，也使人活；使人下陰間，也使人從陰間上來。耶和華使人貧窮，也使人富足；使人降卑，也使人升高。他從灰塵中抬舉貧寒的人，從糞堆中提拔窮乏的人，使他們與顯貴同坐，承受尊貴的座位。大地的柱子屬於耶和華，他把全地安放在柱子上面。耶和華必保護虔誠人的腳步，卻使惡人在黑暗中滅亡，因為人得勝不是靠著力量。至高者在天上打雷，耶和華必打碎與他作對的人。耶和華要審判地的四極，卻要賜力量給他所立的王，高舉他膏立之人的角。”

那憑著自己旨意所計劃而行萬事的，按著他預先所安排的，預定我們在基督裡得基業（“得基業”或譯：“成為神的產業”），

所以，驕傲像鍊子戴在他們的頸項上，強暴好像衣裳穿在他們的身上。他們的罪孽是出於麻木的心（按照《馬索拉文本》，“他們的罪孽是出於麻木的心”應作“他們的眼睛因體胖而凸出”；現參照《七十士譯本》翻譯），他們心裡的惡念氾濫。

你要記念耶和華你的神，因為得財富的能力是他賜給你的，為要堅定他向你的列祖起誓所立的約，像今天一樣。

要觀察神的作為，因為他所屈曲的，誰能弄直呢？

那時，你們就要再看出義人與惡人、事奉神的人和不事奉他的人之間有甚麼分別。”

他若安靜不動，誰能定他有罪呢？他若掩面，誰能看見他呢？無論對待一國或一人，都是這樣。

地上所有的居民，在他來說都是虛無；在天上的萬軍中，他憑自己的意旨行事；在地上的居民中，也是這樣；沒有人能攔住他的手，或問他說：‘你作甚麼？’

洗魯雅的三個兒子約押、亞比篩和亞撒黑都在那裡。亞撒黑的腿輕快如野地的羚羊一般。亞撒黑追趕押尼珥，緊緊地跟著他，不偏左，也不偏右。押尼珥往後瞧著，說：“你是亞撒黑嗎？”他回答：“我正是。”押尼珥對他說：“你或轉左或轉右，抓住一個年輕人，奪去他的武器吧！”可是亞撒黑不願意離開不追趕他。押尼珥再一次對亞撒黑說：“你離開，別追趕我！我為甚麼要把你砍倒在地上呢？以後怎麼還有臉見你的哥哥約押呢？”亞撒黑不肯離開，所以押尼珥就用槍的尾端刺入了他的肚子，槍從他的背後穿出。亞撒黑仆倒在那裡，當場死了。所有來到亞撒黑倒斃的地方的人，都站住不動。

這樣，大衛用機弦和一塊石子勝過了那非利士人。大衛擊殺了那非利士人，但他手中沒有刀。
