I have seen a grievous evil under the sun: wealth hoarded to the harm of its owners,

I’ve seen something very evil on earth. It’s when wealth is stored up and then brings harm to its owners.

So when Jesus heard these things, He said to him,“ You still lack one thing. Sell all that you have and distribute to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven; and come, follow Me.”But when he heard this, he became very sorrowful, for he was very rich.

So Lot went out and spoke to his sons-in-law, who had married his daughters, and said,“ Get up, get out of this place; for the Lord will destroy this city!” But to his sons-in-law he seemed to be joking.

So it was that the beggar died, and was carried by the angels to Abraham’s bosom. The rich man also died and was buried.And being in torments in Hades, he lifted up his eyes and saw Abraham afar off, and Lazarus in his bosom.

There is one who scatters, yet increases more; And there is one who withholds more than is right, But it leads to poverty.The generous soul will be made rich, And he who waters will also be watered himself.

He also said to His disciples:“ There was a certain rich man who had a steward, and an accusation was brought to him that this man was wasting his goods.So he called him and said to him,‘ What is this I hear about you? Give an account of your stewardship, for you can no longer be steward.’“ Then the steward said within himself,‘ What shall I do? For my master is taking the stewardship away from me. I cannot dig; I am ashamed to beg.I have resolved what to do, that when I am put out of the stewardship, they may receive me into their houses.’“ So he called every one of his master’s debtors to him, and said to the first,‘ How much do you owe my master?’And he said,‘ A hundred measures of oil.’ So he said to him,‘ Take your bill, and sit down quickly and write fifty.’Then he said to another,‘ And how much do you owe?’ So he said,‘ A hundred measures of wheat.’ And he said to him,‘ Take your bill, and write eighty.’So the master commended the unjust steward because he had dealt shrewdly. For the sons of this world are more shrewd in their generation than the sons of light.“ And I say to you, make friends for yourselves by unrighteous mammon, that when you fail, they may receive you into an everlasting home.He who is faithful in what is least is faithful also in much; and he who is unjust in what is least is unjust also in much.Therefore if you have not been faithful in the unrighteous mammon, who will commit to your trust the true riches?And if you have not been faithful in what is another man’s, who will give you what is your own?“ No servant can serve two masters; for either he will hate the one and love the other, or else he will be loyal to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve God and mammon.”

So are the ways of everyone who is greedy for gain; It takes away the life of its owners.

Riches do not profit in the day of wrath, But righteousness delivers from death.

Neither their silver nor their gold Shall be able to deliver them In the day of the LORD’s wrath; But the whole land shall be devoured By the fire of His jealousy, For He will make speedy riddance Of all those who dwell in the land.

Lot also, who went with Abram, had flocks and herds and tents.Now the land was not able to support them, that they might dwell together, for their possessions were so great that they could not dwell together.And there was strife between the herdsmen of Abram’s livestock and the herdsmen of Lot’s livestock. The Canaanites and the Perizzites then dwelt in the land.So Abram said to Lot,“ Please let there be no strife between you and me, and between my herdsmen and your herdsmen; for we are brethren.Is not the whole land before you? Please separate from me. If you take the left, then I will go to the right; or, if you go to the right, then I will go to the left.”And Lot lifted his eyes and saw all the plain of Jordan, that it was well watered everywhere( before the Lord destroyed Sodom and Gomorrah) like the garden of the Lord, like the land of Egypt as you go toward Zoar.Then Lot chose for himself all the plain of Jordan, and Lot journeyed east. And they separated from each other.

Then He spoke a parable to them, saying:“ The ground of a certain rich man yielded plentifully.And he thought within himself, saying,‘ What shall I do, since I have no room to store my crops?’So he said,‘ I will do this: I will pull down my barns and build greater, and there I will store all my crops and my goods.And I will say to my soul,“ Soul, you have many goods laid up for many years; take your ease; eat, drink, and be merry.”’But God said to him,‘ Fool! This night your soul will be required of you; then whose will those things be which you have provided?’“ So is he who lays up treasure for himself, and is not rich toward God.”

There is one alone, without companion: He has neither son nor brother. Yet there is no end to all his labors, Nor is his eye satisfied with riches. But he never asks,“ For whom do I toil and deprive myself of good?” This also is vanity and a grave misfortune.

Now the firstborn said to the younger,“ Our father is old, and there is no man on the earth to come in to us as is the custom of all the earth.Come, let us make our father drink wine, and we will lie with him, that we may preserve the lineage of our father.”So they made their father drink wine that night. And the firstborn went in and lay with her father, and he did not know when she lay down or when she arose.It happened on the next day that the firstborn said to the younger,“ Indeed I lay with my father last night; let us make him drink wine tonight also, and you go in and lie with him, that we may preserve the lineage of our father.”Then they made their father drink wine that night also. And the younger arose and lay with him, and he did not know when she lay down or when she arose.Thus both the daughters of Lot were with child by their father.The firstborn bore a son and called his name Moab; he is the father of the Moabites to this day.And the younger, she also bore a son and called his name Ben-Ammi; he is the father of the people of Ammon to this day.

For the turning away of the simple will slay them, And the complacency of fools will destroy them;

If they say,“ Come with us, Let us lie in wait to shed blood; Let us lurk secretly for the innocent without cause;Let us swallow them alive like Sheol, And whole, like those who go down to the Pit;We shall find all kinds of precious possessions, We shall fill our houses with spoil;

So he brought back all the goods, and also brought back his brother Lot and his goods, as well as the women and the people.

But his wife looked back behind him, and she became a pillar of salt.

For the foolish person will speak foolishness, And his heart will work iniquity: To practice ungodliness, To utter error against the Lord, To keep the hungry unsatisfied, And he will cause the drink of the thirsty to fail.Also the schemes of the schemer are evil; He devises wicked plans To destroy the poor with lying words, Even when the needy speaks justice.But a generous man devises generous things, And by generosity he shall stand.

“ There was a certain rich man who was clothed in purple and fine linen and fared sumptuously every day.

All this I have seen, and applied my heart to every work that is done under the sun: There is a time in which one man rules over another to his own hurt.

Come now, you rich, weep and howl for your miseries that are coming upon you!Your riches are corrupted, and your garments are moth-eaten.Your gold and silver are corroded, and their corrosion will be a witness against you and will eat your flesh like fire. You have heaped up treasure in the last days.Indeed the wages of the laborers who mowed your fields, which you kept back by fraud, cry out; and the cries of the reapers have reached the ears of the Lord of Sabaoth.

But those who desire to be rich fall into temptation and a snare, and into many foolish and harmful lusts which drown men in destruction and perdition.For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evil, for which some have strayed from the faith in their greediness, and pierced themselves through with many sorrows.

In that day a man will cast away his idols of silver And his idols of gold, Which they made, each for himself to worship, To the moles and bats,

Then Zacchaeus stood and said to the Lord,“ Look, Lord, I give half of my goods to the poor; and if I have taken anything from anyone by false accusation, I restore fourfold.”

Listen, my beloved brethren: Has God not chosen the poor of this world to be rich in faith and heirs of the kingdom which He promised to those who love Him?But you have dishonored the poor man. Do not the rich oppress you and drag you into the courts?Do they not blaspheme that noble name by which you are called?
