Again, I saw that for all toil and every skillful work a man is envied by his neighbor. This also is vanity and grasping for the wind.

我也看到，一切的勞苦和各樣工作的技能，都是出於人與鄰人之間的嫉妒。這也是虛空，也是捕風！

我見人因勞力、及諸巧工、為鄰所嫉、斯亦虛空、乃為捕風、

我觀世人、勞而得功、同人媢嫉、此亦捕風捉影而已。

我觀世人勞碌經營、皆緣彼此相妒、此亦屬於虛、皆如捕風、

And I saw that all toil and all achievement spring from one person’s envy of another. This too is meaningless, a chasing after the wind.

I also saw that a person works hard and accomplishes a lot. But they do it only because they want what another person has. That doesn’t have any meaning either. It’s like chasing the wind.

Then I saw that all toil and all skill in work come from a man’s envy of his neighbor. This also is vanity and a striving after wind.

Then I observed that most people are motivated to success because they envy their neighbors. But this, too, is meaningless— like chasing the wind.

I saw that all labor and all skillful work is due to one person’s jealousy of another. This too is futile and a pursuit of the wind.

I have seen that every labor and every skill which is done is the result of rivalry between a person and his neighbor. This too is futility and striving after wind.

Then I saw all labor and every skilful work, that for this a man is envied of his neighbor. This also is vanity and a striving after wind.

I saw that all labor and all skillful work is due to a man’s jealousy of his friend. This too is futile and a pursuit of the wind.

Again, I considered all travail, and every right work, that for this a man is envied of his neighbour. This[ is] also vanity and vexation of spirit.

Then I considered all the skillful work that is done: Surely it is nothing more than competition between one person and another. This also is profitless– like chasing the wind.

Then I saw all the labor and achievement that is the envy of a man’s neighbor. This also is vanity and a striving after wind.

I have seen all the works that are done under the sun; and indeed, all is vanity and grasping for the wind.

For there is a man whose labor is with wisdom, knowledge, and skill; yet he must leave his heritage to a man who has not labored for it. This also is vanity and a great evil.

Since there are many things that increase vanity, How is man the better?

Then Saul was very angry, and the saying displeased him; and he said,“ They have ascribed to David ten thousands, and to me they have ascribed only thousands. Now what more can he have but the kingdom?”So Saul eyed David from that day forward.

For God gives wisdom and knowledge and joy to a man who is good in His sight; but to the sinner He gives the work of gathering and collecting, that he may give to him who is good before God. This also is vanity and grasping for the wind.

Abel also brought of the firstborn of his flock and of their fat. And the Lord respected Abel and his offering,but He did not respect Cain and his offering. And Cain was very angry, and his countenance fell.So the Lord said to Cain,“ Why are you angry? And why has your countenance fallen?If you do well, will you not be accepted? And if you do not do well, sin lies at the door. And its desire is for you, but you should rule over it.”Now Cain talked with Abel his brother; and it came to pass, when they were in the field, that Cain rose up against Abel his brother and killed him.

There was no end of all the people over whom he was made king; Yet those who come afterward will not rejoice in him. Surely this also is vanity and grasping for the wind.

Better is the sight of the eyes than the wandering of desire. This also is vanity and grasping for the wind.

And David behaved wisely in all his ways, and the Lord was with him.Therefore, when Saul saw that he behaved very wisely, he was afraid of him.But all Israel and Judah loved David, because he went out and came in before them.

This is the history of Jacob. Joseph, being seventeen years old, was feeding the flock with his brothers. And the lad was with the sons of Bilhah and the sons of Zilpah, his father’s wives; and Joseph brought a bad report of them to his father.Now Israel loved Joseph more than all his children, because he was the son of his old age. Also he made him a tunic of many colors.But when his brothers saw that their father loved him more than all his brothers, they hated him and could not speak peaceably to him.Now Joseph had a dream, and he told it to his brothers; and they hated him even more.So he said to them,“ Please hear this dream which I have dreamed:There we were, binding sheaves in the field. Then behold, my sheaf arose and also stood upright; and indeed your sheaves stood all around and bowed down to my sheaf.”And his brothers said to him,“ Shall you indeed reign over us? Or shall you indeed have dominion over us?” So they hated him even more for his dreams and for his words.Then he dreamed still another dream and told it to his brothers, and said,“ Look, I have dreamed another dream. And this time, the sun, the moon, and the eleven stars bowed down to me.”So he told it to his father and his brothers; and his father rebuked him and said to him,“ What is this dream that you have dreamed? Shall your mother and I and your brothers indeed come to bow down to the earth before you?”And his brothers envied him, but his father kept the matter in mind.

and Saul was still more afraid of David. So Saul became David’s enemy continually.Then the princes of the Philistines went out to war. And so it was, whenever they went out, that David behaved more wisely than all the servants of Saul, so that his name became highly esteemed.

Wrath is cruel and anger a torrent, But who is able to stand before jealousy?

For he knew that they had handed Him over because of envy.

Or do you think that the Scripture says in vain,“ The Spirit who dwells in us yearns jealously”?

“ And the patriarchs, becoming envious, sold Joseph into Egypt. But God was with him
