Then I applied myself to the understanding of wisdom, and also of madness and folly, but I learned that this, too, is a chasing after the wind.

我又专心察明智慧、狂妄，和愚昧，乃知这也是捕风。

我復專心以明智慧、而知狂妄愚蒙、乃覺亦屬捕風、

我專我心、窮察智愚、祇徒勞焉。

不如專心考辨、何為智慧、何為癡頑、何為愚蒙、乃知此亦如捕風、

Then I used my mind to understand what it really means to be wise. And I wanted to know what foolish pleasure is all about. But I found out that it’s also like chasing the wind.

And I applied my heart to know wisdom and to know madness and folly. I perceived that this also is but a striving after wind.

So I set out to learn everything from wisdom to madness and folly. But I learned firsthand that pursuing all this is like chasing the wind.

I applied my mind to know wisdom and knowledge, madness and folly; I learned that this too is a pursuit of the wind.

And I applied my mind to know wisdom and to know insanity and foolishness; I realized that this also is striving after wind.

And I set my heart to know wisdom and to know madness and folly. I perceived that this also is grasping for the wind.

And I applied my heart to know wisdom, and to know madness and folly: I perceived that this also was a striving after wind.

I applied my mind to know wisdom and knowledge, madness and folly; I learned that this too is a pursuit of the wind.

And I gave my heart to know wisdom, and to know madness and folly: I perceived that this also is vexation of spirit.

So I decided to discern the benefit of wisdom and knowledge over foolish behavior and ideas; however, I concluded that even this endeavor is like trying to chase the wind!

I tried cheering myself with wine, and embracing folly— my mind still guiding me with wisdom. I wanted to see what was good for people to do under the heavens during the few days of their lives.

but test them all; hold on to what is good,

I denied myself nothing my eyes desired; I refused my heart no pleasure. My heart took delight in all my labor, and this was the reward for all my toil.Yet when I surveyed all that my hands had done and what I had toiled to achieve, everything was meaningless, a chasing after the wind; nothing was gained under the sun.Then I turned my thoughts to consider wisdom, and also madness and folly. What more can the king’s successor do than what has already been done?

I applied my mind to study and to explore by wisdom all that is done under the heavens. What a heavy burden God has laid on mankind!I have seen all the things that are done under the sun; all of them are meaningless, a chasing after the wind.

All this I tested by wisdom and I said,“ I am determined to be wise”— but this was beyond me.Whatever exists is far off and most profound— who can discover it?So I turned my mind to understand, to investigate and to search out wisdom and the scheme of things and to understand the stupidity of wickedness and the madness of folly.
