我專我心、窮察智愚、祇徒勞焉。

不如專心考辨、何為智慧、何為癡頑、何為愚蒙、乃知此亦如捕風、

Then I applied myself to the understanding of wisdom, and also of madness and folly, but I learned that this, too, is a chasing after the wind.

Then I used my mind to understand what it really means to be wise. And I wanted to know what foolish pleasure is all about. But I found out that it’s also like chasing the wind.

So I set out to learn everything from wisdom to madness and folly. But I learned firsthand that pursuing all this is like chasing the wind.

I applied my mind to know wisdom and knowledge, madness and folly; I learned that this too is a pursuit of the wind.

And I applied my mind to know wisdom and to know insanity and foolishness; I realized that this also is striving after wind.

And I set my heart to know wisdom and to know madness and folly. I perceived that this also is grasping for the wind.

So I decided to discern the benefit of wisdom and knowledge over foolish behavior and ideas; however, I concluded that even this endeavor is like trying to chase the wind!

I searched with my heart how to cheer my body with wine— my heart still guiding me with wisdom— and how to lay hold on folly, till I might see what was good for the children of man to do under heaven during the few days of their life.

but test everything; hold fast what is good.

And whatever my eyes desired I did not keep from them. I kept my heart from no pleasure, for my heart found pleasure in all my toil, and this was my reward for all my toil.Then I considered all that my hands had done and the toil I had expended in doing it, and behold, all was vanity and a striving after wind, and there was nothing to be gained under the sun.So I turned to consider wisdom and madness and folly. For what can the man do who comes after the king? Only what has already been done.

And I applied my heart to seek and to search out by wisdom all that is done under heaven. It is an unhappy business that God has given to the children of man to be busy with.I have seen everything that is done under the sun, and behold, all is vanity and a striving after wind.

All this I have tested by wisdom. I said,“ I will be wise,” but it was far from me.That which has been is far off, and deep, very deep; who can find it out?I turned my heart to know and to search out and to seek wisdom and the scheme of things, and to know the wickedness of folly and the foolishness that is madness.
