「但耶書崙吃飽喝足，養肥長壯後，就得意忘形，背棄造他們的上帝，藐視救他們的磐石。

我親自審理他們中間的是非，教他們認識上帝的律例和法度。」

以色列人對基甸說：「你從米甸人手中救了我們，請你和你的子孫統治我們。」

你帶我們離開奶蜜之鄉，要讓我們死在曠野，這還不夠嗎？你還想自立為王管轄我們嗎？你並沒有領我們到奶蜜之鄉，也沒有給我們田地和葡萄園作產業，你還想繼續矇騙我們嗎？我們不去！」摩西非常憤怒，就對耶和華說：「求你不要接納他們的祭物。我沒有取過他們一頭驢，也沒有害過他們任何人。」

「請你們去問示劍人，耶路·巴力的七十個兒子統治他們好呢，還是一個人統治他們好呢？別忘記我是你們的骨肉至親。」

雅各的子孫中未見有罪惡，以色列人中看不見有禍患。他們的上帝耶和華與他們同在，他們向自己的君王歡呼。

以色列人還沒有君王統治之前，在以東做王的人如下：

你要聽我的勸告，願上帝與你同在。你要做百姓的代表，把案件奏明上帝，

那時，以色列沒有王，人人各行其是。
