We put all of these under divine judgment just as we had done to King Sihon of Heshbon– every occupied city, including women and children.

Get up, make your way across Wadi Arnon. Look! I have already delivered over to you Sihon the Amorite, king of Heshbon, and his land. Go ahead! Take it! Engage him in war!

As for the cities of these peoples that the LORD your God is going to give you as an inheritance, you must not allow a single living thing to survive.Instead you must utterly annihilate them– the Hittites, Amorites, Canaanites, Perizzites, Hivites, and Jebusites– just as the LORD your God has commanded you,so that they cannot teach you all the abhorrent ways they worship their gods, causing you to sin against the LORD your God.

So Israel made a vow to the LORD and said,“ If you will indeed deliver this people into our hand, then we will utterly destroy their cities.”

The LORD, however, said to me,“ Don’t be afraid of him because I have already given him, his whole army, and his land to you. You will do to him exactly what you did to King Sihon of the Amorites who lived in Heshbon.”

The Israelites plundered all the goods of these cities and the cattle, but they totally destroyed all the people and allowed no one who breathed to live.

Sihon, king of the Amorites, for his loyal love endures,Og, king of Bashan, for his loyal love endures,and gave their land as an inheritance, for his loyal love endures,

“‘ Surely anything which a man permanently dedicates to the LORD from all that belongs to him, whether from people, animals, or his landed property, must be neither sold nor redeemed; anything permanently dedicated is most holy to the LORD.Any human being who is permanently dedicated must not be ransomed; such a person must be put to death.
