Then men will say,“ Because they abandoned the covenant of Yahweh, the God of their fathers, which he made with them when he brought them out of the land of Egypt,

我向我的百姓發怒，使我的產業受凌辱，將他們交在你手中；然而你毫不憐憫他們，連老年人你也加極重的軛。

看哪，耶和華使地空虛，變為荒蕪，地面扭曲，居民四散。那時，百姓如何，祭司也如何；僕人如何，主人也如何；婢女如何，主母也如何；買主如何，賣主也如何；放債的如何，借貸的也如何；債主如何，欠債的也如何。地必全然空虛，盡都荒蕪，因為這話是耶和華說的。大地悲哀凋零，世界敗落衰殘，地上居高位的人也沒落了。地被其上的居民所污穢，因為他們犯了律法，廢了律例，背了永約。所以，詛咒吞滅大地，住在其上的都有罪；地上的居民被火焚燒，剩下的人稀少。

這約不像我拉着他們祖宗的手，領他們出埃及地的時候與他們所立的約。我雖作他們的丈夫，他們卻背了我的約。這是耶和華說的。

凡遇見他們的，就把他們吞滅。敵人說：「我們不算有罪；因他們得罪了那可作真正居所的耶和華，就是他們祖先所仰望的耶和華。」

不像我拉着他們祖宗的手領他們出埃及地的時候，與他們所立的約；因為他們不恆心守我的約，所以我也不理他們；這是主說的。

護衛長提耶利米來，對他說：「耶和華－你的上帝曾說要降這災禍給此地。耶和華照他所說的做了，已使這災禍臨到；因你們得罪耶和華，不聽從他的話，所以這事臨到你們。

必有人回答說：『是因他們離棄了耶和華－他們上帝的約，事奉敬拜別神。』」

他說：「我為耶和華－萬軍之上帝大發熱心，因為以色列人背棄了你的約，毀壞了你的壇，用刀殺了你的先知，只剩下我一人，他們還要追殺我。」耶和華說：「你出來站在山上，在耶和華面前。」看哪，耶和華從那裏經過。在耶和華面前有烈風大作，山崩石裂，耶和華卻不在風中；風後有地震，耶和華也不在其中；地震後有火，耶和華也不在火中；火以後，有輕微細小的聲音。以利亞聽見，就用外衣蒙臉，出來站在洞口。聽啊，有聲音向他說：「以利亞，你在這裏做甚麼？」他說：「我為耶和華－萬軍之上帝大發熱心，因為以色列人背棄了你的約，毀壞了你的壇，用刀殺了你的先知，只剩下我一人，他們還要追殺我。」
