Your children and wives are here with you too. So are the outsiders living in your camps. They chop your wood and carry your water.

your little ones, your wives, and thy sojourner that is in the midst of thy camps, from the hewer of thy wood unto the drawer of thy water;

“ A foreigner residing among you who wants to celebrate the Lord’s Passover must have all the males in his household circumcised; then he may take part like one born in the land. No uncircumcised male may eat it.The same law applies both to the native- born and to the foreigner residing among you.” (niv)

The rabble with them began to crave other food, and again the Israelites started wailing and said,“ If only we had meat to eat! (niv)

They continued,“ Let them live, but let them be woodcutters and water carriers in the service of the whole assembly.” So the leaders’ promise to them was kept.Then Joshua summoned the Gibeonites and said,“ Why did you deceive us by saying,‘ We live a long way from you,’ while actually you live near us?You are now under a curse: You will never be released from service as woodcutters and water carriers for the house of my God.”They answered Joshua,“ Your servants were clearly told how the Lord your God had commanded his servant Moses to give you the whole land and to wipe out all its inhabitants from before you. So we feared for our lives because of you, and that is why we did this.We are now in your hands. Do to us whatever seems good and right to you.”So Joshua saved them from the Israelites, and they did not kill them.That day he made the Gibeonites woodcutters and water carriers for the assembly, to provide for the needs of the altar of the Lord at the place the Lord would choose. And that is what they are to this day. (niv)

but the seventh day is a sabbath to the Lord your God. On it you shall not do any work, neither you, nor your son or daughter, nor your male or female servant, nor your ox, your donkey or any of your animals, nor any foreigner residing in your towns, so that your male and female servants may rest, as you do.
