“ Judah mourns And her gates languish; Her people sit on the ground in mourning garments, And the cry of Jerusalem has ascended.Their nobles have sent their servants for water; They have come to the cisterns and found no water. They have returned with their containers empty; They have been put to shame and humiliated, And they cover their heads,Because the ground is cracked, For there has been no rain on the land. The farmers have been put to shame, They have covered their heads.For even the doe in the field has given birth only to abandon her young, Because there is no grass.

My eyes fail because of tears, My spirit is greatly troubled; My heart is poured out on the earth Because of the destruction of the daughter of my people, When little ones and infants languish In the streets of the city.They say to their mothers,“ Where is grain and wine?” As they faint like a wounded person In the streets of the city, As their lives are poured out In their mothers’ arms.How shall I admonish you? What shall I compare to you, Daughter of Jerusalem? What shall I liken to you as I comfort you, Virgin daughter of Zion? For your collapse is as vast as the sea; Who can heal you?Your prophets have seen for you Worthless and deceptive visions; And they have not exposed your wrongdoing So as to restore you from captivity, But they have seen for you worthless and misleading pronouncements.All who pass along the way Clap their hands in ridicule at you; They hiss and shake their heads At the daughter of Jerusalem:“ Is this the city of which they said,‘ Perfect in beauty, A joy to all the earth’?”All your enemies Have opened their mouths wide against you; They hiss and gnash their teeth. They say,“ We have engulfed her! This certainly is the day which we awaited; We have reached it, we have seen it!”The Lord has done what He determined; He has accomplished His word Which He commanded from days of old. He has torn down without sparing, And He has helped the enemy to rejoice over you; He has exalted the might of your adversaries.Their heart cried out to the Lord:“ You wall of the daughter of Zion, Let your tears stream down like a river day and night; Give yourself no relief, Let your eyes have no rest.Arise, whimper in the night At the beginning of the night watches; Pour out your heart like water Before the presence of the Lord; Raise your hands to Him For the life of your little ones Who languish because of hunger At the head of every street.See, Lord, and look! With whom have You dealt this way? Should women really eat their children, The little ones who were born healthy? Should priest and prophet really be killed In the sanctuary of the Lord?On the ground in the streets Lie young and old; My virgins and my young men Have fallen by the sword. You have put them to death on the day of Your anger, You have slaughtered, without sparing.You called as on the day of an appointed feast My terrors on every side; And there was no one who survived or escaped On the day of the Lord’s anger. As for those whom I brought forth healthy and whom I raised, My enemy annihilated them.”

Therefore, a curse devours the earth, and those who live on it suffer for their guilt. Therefore, the inhabitants of the earth decrease in number, and few people are left.The new wine mourns, The vine decays, All the joyful hearted sigh.The joy of tambourines ceases, The noise of revelers stops, The joy of the harp ceases.They do not drink wine with song; Intoxicating drink is bitter to those who drink it.The city of chaos is broken down; Every house is shut up so that no one may enter.There is an outcry in the streets concerning the wine; All joy turns to gloom. The joy of the earth is banished.Desolation is left in the city And the gate is battered to ruins.

So the Lord was no longer able to endure it, because of the evil of your deeds, because of the abominations which you have committed; so your land has become a place of ruins, an object of horror, and a curse, without an inhabitant, as it is this day.

Wail like a virgin clothed with sackcloth For the groom of her youth.The grain offering and the drink offering have been cut off From the house of the Lord. The priests mourn, The ministers of the Lord.The field is ruined, The land mourns; For the grain is ruined, The new wine has dried up, Fresh oil has failed.Be ashamed, you farm workers, Wail, you vinedressers, For the wheat and the barley; Because the harvest of the field is destroyed.The vine has dried up And the fig tree has withered; The pomegranate, the palm also, and the apple tree, All the trees of the field have dried up. Indeed, joy has dried up From the sons of mankind.Put on sackcloth And mourn, you priests; Wail, you ministers of the altar! Come, spend the night in sackcloth, You ministers of my God, For the grain offering and the drink offering Have been withheld from the house of your God.Consecrate a fast, Proclaim a solemn assembly; Gather the elders And all the inhabitants of the land To the house of the Lord your God, And cry out to the Lord.Woe for the day! For the day of the Lord is near, And it will come as destruction from the Almighty.Has food not been cut off before our eyes, and Joy and rejoicing from the house of our God?The seeds have dried up under their shovels; The storehouses have become desolate, The grain silos are ruined, Because the grain has dried up.How the animals have groaned! The herds of cattle have wandered aimlessly Because there is no pasture for them; Even the flocks of sheep have suffered.

The curse of the Lord is on the house of the wicked, But He blesses the home of the righteous.

“ You start an ambitious project, but behold, it comes to little; when you bring it home, I blow it away. Why?” declares the Lord of armies.“ It is because of My house which remains desolate, while each of you runs to his own house.Therefore, because of you the sky has withheld its dew, and the earth has withheld its produce.And I called for a drought on the land, on the mountains, on the grain, on the new wine, on the oil, on what the ground produces, on mankind, on cattle, and on all the products of the labor of your hands.”

If you do not listen, and if you do not take it to heart to give honor to My name,” says the Lord of armies,“ then I will send the curse upon you and I will curse your blessings; and indeed, I have cursed them already, because you are not taking it to heart.

from that time when one came to a grain heap of twenty measures, there would be only ten; and when one came to the wine vat to draw fifty measures, there would be only twenty.I struck you and every work of your hands with scorching wind, mildew, and hail; yet you did not come back to Me,’ declares the Lord.

If I go out to the country, There are those killed by the sword! Or if I enter the city, There are diseases from famine! For both prophet and priest Have wandered around in the land that they do not know.’ ”

He will turn the hearts of the fathers back to their children and the hearts of the children to their fathers, so that I will not come and strike the land with complete destruction.”

You are cursed with a curse, for you are robbing Me, the entire nation of you!Bring the whole tithe into the storehouse, so that there may be food in My house, and put Me to the test now in this,” says the Lord of armies,“ if I do not open for you the windows of heaven and pour out for you a blessing until it overflows.Then I will rebuke the devourer for you, so that it will not destroy the fruit of your ground; nor will the vine in the field prove fruitless to you,” says the Lord of armies.“ All the nations will call you blessed, for you will be a delightful land,” says the Lord of armies.

What the gnawing locust has left, the swarming locust has eaten; And what the swarming locust has left, the creeping locust has eaten; And what the creeping locust has left, the stripping locust has eaten.

A fire consumes before them, And behind them a flame devours. The land is like the Garden of Eden before them, But a desolate wilderness behind them, And nothing at all escapes them.

so that he will not give even one of them any of the flesh of his children which he will eat, since he has nothing else left, during the siege and the hardship by which your enemy will oppress you in all your towns.

I will make Jerusalem a heap of ruins, A haunt of jackals; And I will make the cities of Judah a desolation without inhabitant.”

then I will make this house like Shiloh, and I will make this city a curse to all the nations of the earth.” ’ ”

How dark the gold has become, How the pure gold has changed! The sacred stones are spilled out At the corner of every street.The precious sons of Zion, Weighed against pure gold, How they are regarded as earthenware jars, The work of a potter’s hands!Even jackals offer the breast, They nurse their young; But the daughter of my people has proved herself cruel, Like ostriches in the wilderness.The tongue of the infant clings To the roof of its mouth because of thirst; The children ask for bread, But no one breaks it for them.Those who used to eat delicacies Are made to tremble in the streets; Those who were raised in crimson clothing Embrace garbage heaps.For the wrongdoing of the daughter of my people Is greater than the sin of Sodom, Which was overthrown as in a moment, And no hands were turned toward her.Her consecrated ones were purer than snow, They shined more than milk; They were more ruddy in body than pearls of coral, Their form was like lapis lazuli.Their appearance is darker than soot, They are not recognized in the streets; Their skin is shriveled on their bones, It is dry, it has become like wood.Better off are those killed by the sword Than those killed by hunger; For they waste away, stricken By the lack of the produce of the field.The hands of compassionate women Boiled their own children; They became food for them Due to the destruction of the daughter of my people.The Lord has expended His wrath, He has poured out His fierce anger; And He has kindled a fire in Zion, And it has consumed its foundations.The kings of the earth did not believe, Nor did any of the inhabitants of the world, That the adversary and the enemy Would enter the gates of Jerusalem.Because of the sins of her prophets And the wrongdoings of her priests, Who have shed in her midst The blood of the righteous,

So he went and did everything according to the word of the Lord, for he went and lived by the brook Cherith, which is east of the Jordan.

So I will profane the officials of the sanctuary, And I will turn Jacob over to destruction and Israel to abuse.

Now you are cursed from the ground, which has opened its mouth to receive your brother’s blood from your hand.When you cultivate the ground, it will no longer yield its strength to you; you will be a wanderer and a drifter on the earth.”

Then I would send rain on one city, But on another city I would not send rain; One part would be rained on, While the part not rained on would dry up.So the people of two or three cities would stagger to another city to drink water, But would not be satisfied; Yet you have not returned to Me,” declares the Lord.“ I struck you with scorching wind and mildew; The caterpillar was devouring Your many gardens and vineyards, fig trees and olive trees; Yet you have not returned to Me,” declares the Lord.

How lonely sits the city That once had many people! She has become like a widow Who was once great among the nations! She who was a princess among the provinces Has become a forced laborer!

Our skin has become as hot as an oven, Because of the ravages of hunger.

And he named him Noah, saying,“ This one will give us comfort from our work and from the hard labor of our hands caused by the ground which the Lord has cursed.”

“ Blessed will you be in the city, and blessed will you be in the country.“ Blessed will be the children of your womb, the produce of your ground, and the offspring of your animals: the newborn of your herd and the young of your flock.“ Blessed will be your basket and your kneading bowl.“ Blessed will you be when you come in, and blessed will you be when you go out.“ The Lord will cause your enemies who rise up against you to be defeated by you; they will go out against you one way and will flee at your presence seven ways.The Lord will command the blessing for you in your barns and in everything that you put your hand to, and He will bless you in the land that the Lord your God is giving you.The Lord will establish you as a holy people to Himself, as He swore to you, if you keep the commandments of the Lord your God and walk in His ways.So all the peoples of the earth will see that you are called by the name of the Lord, and they will be afraid of you.And the Lord will give you more than enough prosperity, in the children of your womb, in the offspring of your livestock, and in the produce of your ground, in the land which the Lord swore to your fathers to give you.The Lord will open for you His good storehouse, the heavens, to give rain to your land in its season and to bless every work of your hand; and you will lend to many nations, but you will not borrow.And the Lord will make you the head and not the tail, and you will only be above, and not be underneath, if you listen to the commandments of the Lord your God which I am commanding you today, to follow them carefully,and do not turn aside from any of the words which I am commanding you today, to the right or the left, to pursue other gods to serve them.

Now Elijah the Tishbite, who was of the settlers of Gilead, said to Ahab,“ As the Lord, the God of Israel lives, before whom I stand, there shall certainly be neither dew nor rain during these years, except by my word.”

But she said,“ As the Lord your God lives, I have no food, only a handful of flour in the bowl and a little oil in the jar; and behold, I am gathering a few sticks so that I may go in and prepare it for me and my son, so that we may eat it and die.”
