Like obedient children, do not comply with the evil urges you used to follow in your ignorance,but, like the Holy One who called you, become holy yourselves in all of your conduct,for it is written,“ You shall be holy, because I am holy.”

You must love the LORD your God and do what he requires; keep his statutes, ordinances, and commandments at all times.

I am speaking to you because you are the ones who saw all the great deeds of the LORD!Now pay attention to all the commandments I am giving you today, so that you may be strong enough to enter and possess the land where you are headed,

Now, Israel, what does the LORD your God require of you except to revere him, to obey all his commandments, to love him, to serve him with all your mind and being,and to keep the Lord’s commandments and statutes that I am giving you today for your own good?

Though all the nations follow their respective gods, we will follow the LORD our God forever.

So I say this, and insist in the Lord, that you no longer live as the Gentiles do, in the futility of their thinking.They are darkened in their understanding, being alienated from the life of God because of the ignorance that is in them due to the hardness of their hearts.Because they are callous, they have given themselves over to indecency for the practice of every kind of impurity with greediness.But you did not learn about Christ like this,if indeed you heard about him and were taught in him, just as the truth is in Jesus.You were taught with reference to your former way of life to lay aside the old man who is being corrupted in accordance with deceitful desires,to be renewed in the spirit of your mind,and to put on the new man who has been created in God’s image– in righteousness and holiness that comes from truth.

You lived then in debauchery, evil desires, drunkenness, carousing, drinking bouts, and wanton idolatries.
