It shall be, if it gives you answer of peace and opens to you, then it shall be that all the people who are found therein shall become forced laborers to you, and shall serve you.

If they accept and open their gates, all the people in it shall be subject to forced labor and shall work for you.

Suppose they accept your offer and open their gates. Then force all the people in the city to be your slaves. They will have to work for you.

And if it responds to you peaceably and it opens to you, then all the people who are found in it shall do forced labor for you and shall serve you.

If they accept your terms and open the gates to you, then all the people inside will serve you in forced labor.

If it accepts your offer of peace and opens its gates to you, all the people found in it will become forced laborers for you and serve you.

And if it agrees to make peace with you and opens to you, then all the people who are found in it shall become your forced labor and serve you.

And it shall be that if they accept your offer of peace, and open to you, then all the people who are found in it shall be placed under tribute to you, and serve you.

Yet the hand of the house of Joseph prevailed, so that they became subject to forced labor.

When Israel had grown strong, they put the Canaanites to forced labor, and didn’t utterly drive them out.

their children who were left after them in the land, whom the children of Israel were not able utterly to destroy, of them Solomon raised a levy of bondservants to this day.But of the children of Israel Solomon made no bondservants; but they were the men of war, his servants, his princes, his captains, and rulers of his chariots and of his horsemen.

For they are my servants, whom I brought out of the land of Egypt. They shall not be sold as slaves.You shall not rule over him with harshness, but shall fear your God.“‘ As for your male and your female slaves, whom you may have from the nations that are around you, from them you may buy male and female slaves.Moreover, of the children of the aliens who live among you, of them you may buy, and of their families who are with you, which they have conceived in your land; and they will be your property.You may make them an inheritance for your children after you, to hold for a possession. Of them you may take your slaves forever, but over your brothers the children of Israel you shall not rule, one over another, with harshness.

I am for peace, but when I speak, they are for war.

There was not a city that made peace with the children of Israel, except the Hivites, the inhabitants of Gibeon. They took all in battle.For it was of Yahweh to harden their hearts, to come against Israel in battle, that he might utterly destroy them, that they might have no favor, but that he might destroy them, as Yahweh commanded Moses.

But his citizens hated him, and sent an envoy after him, saying,‘ We don’t want this man to reign over us.’

That day Joshua made them wood cutters and drawers of water for the congregation and for Yahweh’s altar to this day, in the place which he should choose.

They didn’t drive out the Canaanites who lived in Gezer; but the Canaanites dwell in the territory of Ephraim to this day, and have become servants to do forced labor.
