那麼，你們一定要立你們的上帝耶和華揀選的人；必須立你們的以色列同胞為王，不可立外族人。

be sure to appoint over you a king the Lord your God chooses. He must be from among your fellow Israelites. Do not place a foreigner over you, one who is not an Israelite.

When that happens, make sure you appoint over yourselves a king the Lord your God chooses. He must be from among your own people. Don’t appoint over yourselves someone from another country. Don’t choose anyone who isn’t from one of the tribes of Israel.

you may indeed set a king over you whom the Lord your God will choose. One from among your brothers you shall set as king over you. You may not put a foreigner over you, who is not your brother.

撒母耳對百姓說：「這就是耶和華為你們選的人。在以色列沒有人能比得上他。」眾人高呼：「願王萬歲！」

耶和華賜給我許多兒子，祂在我眾子中揀選了所羅門，讓他坐以色列的王位，治理耶和華的國。

我說，『不要因追隨假神而跑破鞋子，喉嚨乾渴。』你卻說，『不行！我愛外族的神明，一定要跟隨他們。』

耶西就派人去叫他回來。他面色紅潤，眉清目秀，相貌英俊。耶和華說：「就是他，起來膏立他吧。」撒母耳就拿出盛膏油的角，當著他哥哥們的面膏立他。從那天起，耶和華的靈降在大衛身上。事後，撒母耳回拉瑪去了。

世上的君王一同行動，官長聚集商議，要抵擋耶和華和祂所膏立的王。

從前掃羅做王的時候，率領以色列人出征打仗的是你，耶和華也曾應許讓你做祂以色列子民的牧者和首領。」

在掃羅來的前一天，耶和華已經啟示撒母耳說：「明天這個時候，我會從便雅憫境內差遣一個人到你這裡，你要膏立他做我以色列子民的首領，他會從非利士人手中把我的子民拯救出來，因為我已聽到我子民的呼求，我要施恩給他們。」撒母耳看見掃羅的時候，耶和華就對他說：「這就是我對你說的那個人，他將統治我的子民。」

祂說：「在我的錫安聖山上，我已立了我的君王。」

有些全副武裝的士兵也到希伯崙投奔大衛，要把掃羅的國權交給大衛，正如耶和華的應許。以下是這些人的數目：
