孩子们哪，来听我！我要将敬畏耶和华的道教导你们。

只有活人，活人必称谢你，像我今日称谢你一样。为父的，必使儿女知道你的信实。

他在雅各中立法度，在以色列中设律法；他吩咐我们的祖宗要传给子孙，使将要生的后代子孙可以晓得。他们也要起来告诉他们的子孙，

孩子们，要听父亲的训诲，留心明白道理。因我给你们好的教导，不可离弃我的教诲。当我在父亲面前还是小孩，是母亲独一娇儿的时候，他教导我说：“你的心要持守我的话，遵守我的命令，你就会存活。要获得智慧，要获得聪明，不可忘记，也不可偏离我口中的言语。不可离弃智慧，智慧就庇护你，要爱她，她就保护你。智慧为首，所以要获得智慧，要用你一切所有的换取聪明。高举智慧，她就使你升高，拥抱智慧，她就使你尊荣。她必将恩惠的华冠加在你头上，把荣冕赐给你。”我儿啊，要听，要领受我的言语，你就必延年益寿。我已指教你走智慧的道，引导你行正直的路。你行走，脚步没有阻碍；你奔跑，也不致跌倒。要持定训诲，不可放松；要谨守它，因为它是你的生命。不可行恶人的路，不要走坏人的道；要躲避，不可经过，要转离而去。他们若不行恶，难以成眠，不使人跌倒，就睡卧不安；因为他们以邪恶当饼吃，以暴力当酒喝。但义人的路好像黎明的光，越照越明，直到正午。恶人的道幽暗，自己不知因何跌倒。我儿啊，要留心听我的话，侧耳听我的言语，不可使它们偏离你的眼目，要存记在你心中。因为找到它们的，就找到生命，得到全身的医治。你要保守你心，胜过保守一切，因为生命的泉源由心发出。要离开歪曲的口，转离偏邪的嘴唇。你的两眼要向前看，你的双目直视前方。要修平你脚下的路，你一切的道就必稳固。不可偏左偏右，你的脚要离开邪恶。
