「如今，我們的上帝啊，事已至此，我們還能說什麼呢？因為我們背棄了你的誡命，就是你藉著你的僕人——眾先知給我們的吩咐，『你們將要佔領的那片土地被當地人的污穢玷污，他們的可憎行徑使那裡充滿污穢。

在古代，上帝曾藉著先知以各種方式多次向我們的祖先說話；

耶和華藉著祂的眾先知和先見警告以色列人和猶大人說：「你們要離開惡道，遵守我的誡命和律例，即我吩咐你們祖先遵守並藉著我的僕人——眾先知傳給你們的律法。」但他們充耳不聞，像他們祖先一樣頑固不化，不信靠他們的上帝耶和華，拒絕遵守祂的律例和祂與他們祖先所立的約，無視祂的警告。他們隨從虛無的偶像，自己也變得虛無。他們違背耶和華的命令，去效法周圍的外族人。

你降臨在西奈山，從天上與他們說話，賜給他們公正的典章、信實的律法、美好的律例和誡命。你使他們知道你的神聖安息日，藉你僕人摩西賜給他們誡命、律例和法度。他們餓了，你賜下天糧給他們吃；他們渴了，你使磐石流出水給他們喝。你吩咐他們去佔領你起誓賜給他們的土地。但我們的祖先行事狂傲，頑固不化，不肯聽從你的誡命。他們拒絕聽從，忘記了你為他們所行的奇事，頑固不化，自立首領要回埃及做奴隸。但你是樂意饒恕，有恩典，有憐憫，不輕易發怒，充滿慈愛的上帝，你沒有離棄他們。
