於是王吩咐人召來術士、占卜者、行巫術的和迦勒底人，要他們把王的夢告訴王。他們就來了，站在王面前。

儘管有人對你們說：「求問那些喃喃自語、念念有詞的招魂者和通靈者吧」，但百姓難道不應當求問自己的神嗎？難道應當為活人求問死人嗎？

堅持施行你的符咒和眾多法術吧！那些都是你從年輕時辛勞所得的，或許你能得益處，或許還能讓人恐懼呢！你因謀劃過多而筋疲力盡；現在就讓那些劃分天象、觀看星辰、在新月時說預言的都站出來吧，拯救你脫離那些將要臨到你的事！看哪！他們必像麥稭一樣被火燒毀，他們不能解救自己脫離威猛的火焰；這不是可以用來取暖的炭火，也不是可以坐在其面前的爐火。

這些細弱的穗子竟吞掉了那七個豐碩飽滿的穗子。法老就醒過來了。看哪，原來又是一個夢！到了早晨，法老靈裡煩亂，就派人召來了埃及所有的術士和智慧人。法老向他們講述了他的夢，但沒有人能為法老解夢。
