以銀購窮乏、以屨易貧民、以劣麥出售、

以金市窮民、以履易貧者、以朽穀鬻於人。

以金市貧民、以雙履之值市窮者、以朽穀鬻於人、

buying the poor with silver and the needy for a pair of sandals, selling even the sweepings with the wheat.

You buy poor people to make slaves out of them. You buy those who are in need for a mere pair of sandals. You even sell the worthless parts of your wheat.

And you mix the grain you sell with chaff swept from the floor. Then you enslave poor people for one piece of silver or a pair of sandals.

So as to buy the helpless for money, And the needy for a pair of sandals, And that we may sell the refuse of the wheat?”

Thus saith the LORD; For three transgressions of Israel, and for four, I will not turn away[ the punishment] thereof; because they sold the righteous for silver, and the poor for a pair of shoes;

The children also of Judah and the children of Jerusalem have ye sold unto the Grecians, that ye might remove them far from their border.

And if thy brother[ that dwelleth] by thee be waxen poor, and be sold unto thee; thou shalt not compel him to serve as a bondservant:[ But] as an hired servant,[ and] as a sojourner, he shall be with thee,[ and] shall serve thee unto the year of jubile:And[ then] shall he depart from thee,[ both] he and his children with him, and shall return unto his own family, and unto the possession of his fathers shall he return.For they[ are] my servants, which I brought forth out of the land of Egypt: they shall not be sold as bondmen.

And I said unto them, We after our ability have redeemed our brethren the Jews, which were sold unto the heathen; and will ye even sell your brethren? or shall they be sold unto us? Then held they their peace, and found nothing[ to answer].

And there was a great cry of the people and of their wives against their brethren the Jews.For there were that said, We, our sons, and our daughters,[ are] many: therefore we take up corn[ for them], that we may eat, and live.[ Some] also there were that said, We have mortgaged our lands, vineyards, and houses, that we might buy corn, because of the dearth.There were also that said, We have borrowed money for the king’s tribute,[ and that upon] our lands and vineyards.Yet now our flesh[ is] as the flesh of our brethren, our children as their children: and, lo, we bring into bondage our sons and our daughters to be servants, and[ some] of our daughters are brought unto bondage[ already]: neither[ is it] in our power[ to redeem them]; for other men have our lands and vineyards.

And they have cast lots for my people; and have given a boy for an harlot, and sold a girl for wine, that they might drink.

Hear this, O ye that swallow up the needy, even to make the poor of the land to fail,
