You twist justice, making it a bitter pill for the oppressed. You treat the righteous like dirt.

You trample the poor, stealing their grain through taxes and unfair rent. Therefore, though you build beautiful stone houses, you will never live in them. Though you plant lush vineyards, you will never drink wine from them.For I know the vast number of your sins and the depth of your rebellions. You oppress good people by taking bribes and deprive the poor of justice in the courts.

They spout empty words and make covenants they don’t intend to keep. So injustice springs up among them like poisonous weeds in a farmer’s field.

We know we have rebelled and have denied the Lord. We have turned our backs on our God. We know how unfair and oppressive we have been, carefully planning our deceitful lies.Our courts oppose the righteous, and justice is nowhere to be found. Truth stumbles in the streets, and honesty has been outlawed.

“ Are you the king of Israel or not?” Jezebel demanded.“ Get up and eat something, and don’t worry about it. I’ll get you Naboth’s vineyard!”So she wrote letters in Ahab’s name, sealed them with his seal, and sent them to the elders and other leaders of the town where Naboth lived.In her letters she commanded:“ Call the citizens together for a time of fasting, and give Naboth a place of honor.And then seat two scoundrels across from him who will accuse him of cursing God and the king. Then take him out and stone him to death.”So the elders and other town leaders followed the instructions Jezebel had written in the letters.They called for a fast and put Naboth at a prominent place before the people.Then the two scoundrels came and sat down across from him. And they accused Naboth before all the people, saying,“ He cursed God and the king.” So he was dragged outside the town and stoned to death.

“ Your ancestors refused to listen to this message. They stubbornly turned away and put their fingers in their ears to keep from hearing.They made their hearts as hard as stone, so they could not hear the instructions or the messages that the Lord of Heaven’s Armies had sent them by his Spirit through the earlier prophets. That is why the Lord of Heaven’s Armies was so angry with them.

“ But you have cultivated wickedness and harvested a thriving crop of sins. You have eaten the fruit of lies— trusting in your military might, believing that great armies could make your nation safe.

“ You stubborn people! You are heathen at heart and deaf to the truth. Must you forever resist the Holy Spirit? That’s what your ancestors did, and so do you!Name one prophet your ancestors didn’t persecute! They even killed the ones who predicted the coming of the Righteous One— the Messiah whom you betrayed and murdered.

Must I forever see these evil deeds? Why must I watch all this misery? Wherever I look, I see destruction and violence. I am surrounded by people who love to argue and fight.The law has become paralyzed, and there is no justice in the courts. The wicked far outnumber the righteous, so that justice has become perverted.

Lord, you are searching for honesty. You struck your people, but they paid no attention. You crushed them, but they refused to be corrected. They are determined, with faces set like stone; they have refused to repent.

Can unjust leaders claim that God is on their side— leaders whose decrees permit injustice?They gang up against the righteous and condemn the innocent to death.

The bellows fiercely fan the flames to burn out the corruption. But it does not purify them, for the wickedness remains.I will label them‘ Rejected Silver,’ for I, the Lord, am discarding them.”

Both their hands are equally skilled at doing evil! Officials and judges alike demand bribes. The people with influence get what they want, and together they scheme to twist justice.

For I know how stubborn and obstinate you are. Your necks are as unbending as iron. Your heads are as hard as bronze.
