There are those who hate the one who upholds justice in court and detest the one who tells the truth.

There are people among you who hate anyone who stands for justice in court. They hate those who tell the truth.

They hate him who reproves in the gate, and they abhor him who speaks the truth.

They hate the one who convicts the guilty at the city gate, and they despise the one who speaks with integrity.

They hate him who rebukes in the gate, And they despise him who speaks with integrity.

They hate the one who rebukes in the gate, And they abhor the one who speaks uprightly.

They hate him that reproveth in the gate, and they abhor him that speaketh uprightly.

They hate the one who convicts the guilty at the city gate and despise the one who speaks with integrity.

They hate him that rebuketh in the gate, and they abhor him that speaketh uprightly.

The Israelites hate anyone who arbitrates at the city gate; they despise anyone who speaks honestly.

They hate him who reproves in the gate, and they abhor him who speaks blamelessly.

The king of Israel replied to Jehoshaphat,“ There is one more man who could consult the Lord for us, but I hate him. He never prophesies anything but trouble for me! His name is Micaiah son of Imlah.” Jehoshaphat replied,“ That’s not the way a king should talk! Let’s hear what he has to say.”

Those who convict the innocent by their false testimony will disappear. A similar fate awaits those who use trickery to pervert justice and who tell lies to destroy the innocent.

Lord, I have not abandoned my job as a shepherd for your people. I have not urged you to send disaster. You have heard everything I’ve said.Lord, don’t terrorize me! You alone are my hope in the day of disaster.

So when I tell the truth, you just naturally don’t believe me!Which of you can truthfully accuse me of sin? And since I am telling you the truth, why don’t you believe me?Anyone who belongs to God listens gladly to the words of God. But you don’t listen because you don’t belong to God.”

Anyone who rebukes a mocker will get an insult in return. Anyone who corrects the wicked will get hurt.So don’t bother correcting mockers; they will only hate you. But correct the wise, and they will love you.

They would not be guilty if I had not come and spoken to them. But now they have no excuse for their sin.Anyone who hates me also hates my Father.If I hadn’t done such miraculous signs among them that no one else could do, they would not be guilty. But as it is, they have seen everything I did, yet they still hate me and my Father.

The world can’t hate you, but it does hate me because I accuse it of doing evil.

Then the Spirit of God came upon Zechariah son of Jehoiada the priest. He stood before the people and said,“ This is what God says: Why do you disobey the Lord’s commands and keep yourselves from prospering? You have abandoned the Lord, and now he has abandoned you!”Then the leaders plotted to kill Zechariah, and King Joash ordered that they stone him to death in the courtyard of the Lord’s Temple.That was how King Joash repaid Jehoiada for his loyalty— by killing his son. Zechariah’s last words as he died were,“ May the Lord see what they are doing and avenge my death!”

“ So, my enemy, you have found me!” Ahab exclaimed to Elijah.“ Yes,” Elijah answered,“ I have come because you have sold yourself to what is evil in the Lord’s sight.

All the people who belong to this world will gloat over them and give presents to each other to celebrate the death of the two prophets who had tormented them.

When Ahab saw him, he exclaimed,“ So, is it really you, you troublemaker of Israel?”

Then Amaziah, the priest of Bethel, sent a message to Jeroboam, king of Israel:“ Amos is hatching a plot against you right here on your very doorstep! What he is saying is intolerable.He is saying,‘ Jeroboam will soon be killed, and the people of Israel will be sent away into exile.’”Then Amaziah sent orders to Amos:“ Get out of here, you prophet! Go on back to the land of Judah, and earn your living by prophesying there!Don’t bother us with your prophecies here in Bethel. This is the king’s sanctuary and the national place of worship!”But Amos replied,“ I’m not a professional prophet, and I was never trained to be one. I’m just a shepherd, and I take care of sycamore fig trees.But the Lord called me away from my flock and told me,‘ Go and prophesy to my people in Israel.’Now then, listen to this message from the Lord:“ You say,‘ Don’t prophesy against Israel. Stop preaching against my people.’But this is what the Lord says:‘ Your wife will become a prostitute in this city, and your sons and daughters will be killed. Your land will be divided up, and you yourself will die in a foreign land. And the people of Israel will certainly become captives in exile, far from their homeland.’”

But the people mocked these messengers of God and despised their words. They scoffed at the prophets until the Lord’s anger could no longer be restrained and nothing could be done.

O Lord, you misled me, and I allowed myself to be misled. You are stronger than I am, and you overpowered me. Now I am mocked every day; everyone laughs at me.When I speak, the words burst out.“ Violence and destruction!” I shout. So these messages from the Lord have made me a household joke.But if I say I’ll never mention the Lord or speak in his name, his word burns in my heart like a fire. It’s like a fire in my bones! I am worn out trying to hold it in! I can’t do it!I have heard the many rumors about me. They call me“ The Man Who Lives in Terror.” They threaten,“ If you say anything, we will report it.” Even my old friends are watching me, waiting for a fatal slip.“ He will trap himself,” they say,“ and then we will get our revenge on him.”

All who do evil hate the light and refuse to go near it for fear their sins will be exposed.

The world would love you as one of its own if you belonged to it, but you are no longer part of the world. I chose you to come out of the world, so it hates you.

But the king interrupted him and said,“ Since when have I made you the king’s counselor? Be quiet now before I have you killed!” So the prophet stopped with this warning:“ I know that God has determined to destroy you because you have done this and have refused to accept my counsel.”
